So i have an old Macintosh Portable. And i dont think it works anymore. So i want to hollow it out and put something better inside of it. While possibly keeping it portable, aka on batteries.
And a screen upgrade as well. and a trackpad. It might be a fun project for my dad and i (he'll supply the engineering tools and knowhow).

So I was thinking of either taking apart a macbook pro or a mac mini. I havent decided on which yet. But i like the idea of the mac mini since i might be able to upgrade it more?
But that would require getting the mini to run on batteries (which im up for).

Since i have the room (the portable aint tiny) i want to make it as powerful as possible, and somewhat upgradeable. 'cause i'd love to use this for film and graphics. but i haven't seen
anything about a battery-powered imac or bigger.

So i guess my questions are this:
Macbook or mini? or other? can i battery power something bigger than a macmini?
How big of an internal harddrive can you put in a mac mini?

Any other suggestions? Im still in the early planning stages.
I really want to do this, but have so many ideas. need input. Very Happy

edit:also let me know if there is another forum either here or elsewhere that may be of help. I havent been able to find much on do it yourself apple stuff

Does this really matter? If your going to gut a new computer to put in an old one, your only limited by your imagination, and wallet! LOL! Anyway, if your gutting a mini, it has an internal Sata connector for the HD, you can, and I've seen people use 3.5" drives so the sky's the limit as they say.

Good Luck! Post some pics when it's done!!!!

The first tough question i face is what display to get.
The portable has a lot of area in it's display lid (even though it only has a 10" active matrix screen)
The display panel that opens up is about 6.5" tall, and about 14.75" across.
The only problem is that it's rather shallow, (little more than .5") so we'll have to utilize just the LCD screen, or something.
And like i said, i'd like this to be a movie-themed portable. So a widescreen would be superb. Like a 16:9 or even a 1.85:1.
So my questions to you mini-knowledgeable people are these: Since the mini outputs DVI or VGA, what are my options in the way of a screen to put on it?
Are there any displays that are more power efficient than others?
Where can i find a small widescreen LCDs? Most small LCDs i've found are quite square (4:3).
Also, are there any other ways of hacking a screen into a mini that i could find helpful? Like besides hooking into the display port; like opening up a cord and soldering the wires.

Thinking about a 2ghz intel mini, adding some ram (which ill read about on these forums), and as big a harddrive as i can handle.

Im also thinking of a theme to style it with when completed. Ideas appreciated. Thinking of movie themes. or shows.
Lost is my best idea so far, i think. Making it look like aged metal with an Apple Dharma logo on it.
Or x-files, or kubrick, or the WOPR from Wargames, or the Matrix, star wars, aperture science, initech, TRON. edit: or Pi? oh the pun
Any others?

I think i may look into portable DVD players for my screen. Not sure how it will connect, but luckily the mini can output DVI/VGA/or svid. or component.
Still, any info about putting an lcd on a portable mini would be helpul

Now im wondering about the keyboard. I'd like to use a keyboard out of a macbook pro or powerbook, pref. a backlit one. is this possible? can i hook a laptop keyboard up to the mini either directly to the board or thru usb?
As with anything in this project im willing to hack pieces apart, open wires etc.
