Right now I use Mac the Ripper to copy my DVDs to the Mini's hard drive and use DVD Player.app to view them. I know that the software will play (some) HD-DVDs but has anyone tried copying over a Blu-Ray movie and opening it with DVD Player.app?

You can get an internal Lite-On Blu-Ray desktop drive for about $130 and while that is still slightly outside of my price range, it got me thinking. Next year, when the price of the drives come down a bit, I wouldn't be opposed to sticking one in my Windows box and sending the disc contents across the network to the Mini.

That's the ideal situation anyway, to preserve menus and special features and such. Alternatively, I could just transcode the Blu-Ray to something. Which begs the question, are there known methods (software, hardware) that people use to do that?

My HD TV is begging for HD content Sad

Looks like AnyDVD HD will soon be able to rip them (Windows only I presume). For now, a Beta version soem some Blue-Ray disks.

The members over at the doom9 forums have all of this worked out. It is a pretty established practice to rip HDDVD or Blu-ray. To bad nothing on OS X can yet play them reliably. I would imagine that as osxbmc, FR, and VLC evolve, that will change.

Like DVD ripping and compressing, I think the Mac will lag behind Windows until BR hits a critical mass, and tools are developed for the Mac.

I think Apple just needs to ship support drivers for BD movie playback for Leopard already.

It isn't that complicated. Let people fuss with all the options of getting a drive, but really.... it isn't that hard. All we need is drivers and we are set. There are laptop BD drives, desktop drives, and external ones... we just need OS X drivers! Sad
