I just moved to Jersey, into a studio apartment, and am in the market for a new computer. Due to the fact that if I gain ten pounds in the next year I will not be able to fit IN my apartment, and the simple fact that I am absolutdely fed-up with Windows, I'm thinking Mini. I was hoping to find a place like this, and maybe even a few folks who'd be willing to help out with a couple questions I have before I enter the mac mini world on my own.

1) I can spend around a $1,000 on a machine and have an older monitor that I can use for the time being. My plan is to eventually, once I have warmed to Tiger and the Mac world in general, get a professional level work-horse like a Powermac. Figured the iMac had some limitations I wasn't too crazy about, and getting a mac mini would also let me spend some of that much-loved cash on a kicking 23" display (shortly down the road) so that I have something for when I can actually afford the Powermac.

Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the mini mac: is this a solid plan to work with?

The reason I'll be using the mini mac, for now, are basic need sort of activities: Internet browsing, email, digital pics, couple games (Rise of Nations in particular, RTS types of things mostly), writing (plan on buying iWork ala carte anyway) some bookeeping- as well as just familiarizing myself with the way things work in the mac world.

2) At it's core, Tiger and iLife are HUGE reasons I am being drawn to mac. BUT, what can I or SHOULD I expect as far as the mini's ability to run other programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and/or games?

3) Accesories in a small space are UBER cool, and that's another draw for me to the mini. Which accesories should I keep in mind? An iPod is one that I'm certainly picking up for certain, and I even have some aspirations of podcasting shortly down the road... can I expect being able to do this with the mini- even if only in a limited and raw sort of form? What other little trinkets should I consider?

All in all I guess I'm looking for that final little shove to push me over the edge. I'm looking to read the experience of others who have switched from PC to mac.

Would love to hear ANY advice and opinions. Sorry about the book but I gotta know.

Sincerely,

ChipDWood
(soon to buy a little Apple in the Big Apple)

First off, the mini will be perfect for your small apartment. Getting a computer as small as the Mac mini should help you conserve some space. The iBook or Powerbook would even be better for conserving space. I would buy the $599 mini if you decide to go forward.

The Mac mini is perfect for all the tasks and software you mentioned. I'm not sure about the games.

You don't own an iPod? Shocked I thought everyone in the world owned one. Laughing just kidding. That's what the press would lead you to believe.

A good keyboard, mouse, DVI LCD and Griffin iMic are all the accessories you need to start. Belkin makes a hub for the Mac mini that looks really nice you should consider getting. Ports are at a minimum on the mini. I'm not sure what else you would need off the bat.

I've really thought long and hard about the Powerbook and iBook but since really investigating the mini it just seems to make more sense to me and my situation. I am planning on going with a gig of RAM as well as including the Mighty Mouse and wired keyboard in addition to the standard Superdrive on the $699 model which brings me to roughly $1,000. I'm thinking the RAM shouldn;t have much of a problem handling any of the games I currently play but thought there may be someone with some experience (ie... junky, like me) who could offer some expectations for gaming on the mac mini.

Maybe some extra hard-drive space could be useful as well. I just love the ability that the mac mini seems to have; to add things as your tastes and even needs grow.

Thanks for your help Devo- mucho appreciado.

You're welcome!

The LaCie mini and Newer Technology miniStack are two of the best looking drives that match the Mac mini. I would look into them after you get setup if you need some extra storage.

I'm thinking of gettng an external hard drive sometime also. I was actually going to get the Lacie mini, but after thinking about it, I might get the d2 instead. I'm thinking of keeping the mac mini intill the rev B mactels come out, then buying one of those. So I'm thinking at that time I'll be abe to move the d2 over to the rev B. If I get the Lacie mini, I'd be kinda stuck.

Plus although the Lacie mini is made especially for the mini, as is the belkin hub, some how to me, once you start stacking these things, the whole allure and point of the mini is lost. The once tiny little computer that could has become a huge machine again. With the d2 and some other hub could could hide them behind your display or whatever.

Otherwise the mini has been awesome for me. I've had mine for about a month now. I'm not a power user, some surfing, e-mail, downloading some songs and clips, digital pics etc. The mini is great for that. ilife is a nice compliation, and am learning about it's little tricks and stuff.

All in all a good experience so far.

ChipDwood I hope you have got your mini by now you wont regret it. Be sure to grab an imic, and dont bother with the mighty mouse it sucks! And you might want to hold of on the 23 inch display I heard that does not work good with the mini.
