I run XP with cleartype turned off, so my fonts aren't smoothed. I'm considering the switch to a Mini, but am worried that Apple's OS uses anti aliasing as standard - if you ran XP as I do, how long did it take you to get used to it?

I know you can turn it off for fonts below a certain size, but that just creates a 'two font' system.

You can control font rendering in System preferences. You can force a particular setting or allow the OS to determine when to use different rendering types based on size or display type. So, you can set it up however you like not a big deal.

Yes, I know you can set it to 'Light, Medium and Strong' and turn it off completely for fonts below a certain size - but you can't turn it off completely as you can in XP AFAIK.

As I'm considering pairing my current 15" LCD to a Mini, it may be my monitor that's a problem, having only a .297mm dot pitch.

The lower the better right?

As a test, I've downloaded Safari which renders fonts like OS X - but is this a fair test as it's running in XP?

It looks too blurred to me.

I worry that OS X's anti aliasing will make text too blurry at 1024x768.

I'm basing this on Safari for Windows though.

I wonder whether the Apple Store in Birmingham (UK) will allow me to take my monitor in to test...?

I didn't have a hard time adjusting to the font smoothing in OS X. It looks way better than ClearType in Windows. ClearType just looks blurry to me. There is an free application called TinkerTool that allows you to turn off font smoothing for anything under 144 pt. The highest you can do in System Preferences is 12 pt.

Honestly, you'll come to love it. Going back to the rigid aliased look of XP and Windows Server 2003 on the few PC stations we have here at work has become a painful experience when I have to use them. In OS X you're seeing the type closer to how it was meant to be displayed, after all, those fonts that XP brutalizes are vector based (nice smooth lines, curves and precise angles drawn with beziers), and usually not meant to look pixel chiseled as they do. The closer displays become to print the more our eyes will thank us in the long run.

Also, if you're planning on running OS X at 1024x768, be sure to get a display that has that resolution natively. Doesn't matter which OS you're using if you don't have your display set at its recommended native resolution you're going to get blurred/scaled/distorted imagery and type.

Erm, that's kind of why I'm worried that it'll look bad at 1024x768....

It's my monitor's native res and is low by today's standards.

If it's native it will be sharp and pristine, you'll just have less screen real estate, and things will appear larger than on other larger monitors. On the other hand, running 1024x768 on a 20" monitor with a native resolution of 1280x1024 would be terribly fuzzy.

I understand the issues of running a TFT at native and non native resolutions.

My point was that 1024x768 is relatively low today.

If you'd like to turn anti aliasing off download Tinkertool.

It will turn off anti aliasing regardless of font size
