I have an Intel Core Duo (not the Core Duo 2). Can I insert 2 1GB sticks for a total of 4GB RAM? Even though it won't read 4, will it still read 3?

Two 1GB sticks will give you 2GB of RAM. Did you perhaps intend to ask about two 2GB sticks? If so, the answer is no. The Core Duo machines can only take two 1GB sticks for a total of 2GB of RAM maximum. They won't boot with anything more than that.

Not that I'm aware of. The Napa chipset that the Core Duo series uses just doesn't recognize more than 2GB in any of the Macs that use it (Core Duo iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook).
