I have a slight problem thanks to buying my Sons an X-Box for christmas in that we now share the same room and I'm finding it very distracting to hear gun shots, cars skidding etc whilst I'm on the Mac Confused

I've started trying to use headphones but I'm having to unplug them all the time from the back of the iMac when I want to use the internal speakers. Is it possible to leave the internal speakers on whilst leaving the headphones plugged in. Ideally I would like to be able to control the volume of the internal speakers whilst having the headphones connected perminently.

Anyone any suggestions on how to have control of speakers and headphones on an iMac without having to keep unplugging things.

I wondered if it was possible to switch output between the internal speaker or headphones using software. So I've just tried plugging and unplugging my headphones while watching the 'Sound' panel within System Preferences.

I was expecting to be given a choice of built-in outputs; headphones or internal speaker. Instead, there's just one port - 'Built-in Output' - that changes name between 'Internal Speakers' and 'Headphones' as you plug and unplug the headphones. So as things stand, there's no way to switch between the two using software.

However, if I plug my Griffin iMic into a spare USB socket, I'm now given a choice of outputs - 'Internal Speaker' or 'iMic USB audio system'. Plugging my headphones into the iMic means that I can now alter the destination of the Mini's sound output using the 'Sound' panel of Sys Prefs.

So Cypher, your problem can be solved if you're prepared to buy an iMic. They go quite cheaply on eBay.

Cheers Guys, Cool

I never even considered going for a USB headset Smile and I also like the idea of using the iMic as it would give me more options on the headphone front, I really want to get a set that are comfortable to wear.

I see from your post John that with the iMic you control if the sound goes to internal speaker or iMic, is that the same with the USB headset hackersmovie? You couldn't have it going to both at the same time.

it's either/or, not both. With the USB headset anyway. . . BTW, the USB headset works great for iChat, and any thing else you like. The mic comes up as a separate input and the "headphones" show up separately as well... Very cool bit of kit!! I've used the mic in QT to record my voice, as well as in iMovie to capture sounds, voices, etc. They are comfy and sound real good as well... well worth the $30 U.S. I paid!!!! Way cheap for what you get. They even have an inline volume and mute button!!!

Would any USB headphone/headset work with the Mac. If seen a few where they say not mac compatible not sure why some are and others aren't

Not sure. I bought the Logitech headphones because they were on sale and said "Mac" on the box. I would make sure they are just so you don't run into issues. . .

When shopping around, I also found that a few headsets didn't explicitly mention Mac compatibility and I worried about spending good money on USB headphones to discover that they wouldn't work.

The iMic got around this by making any headphones/headset with a 3.5mm jack compatible with the Mini. Another attraction was that its input socket can be switched between 'Line-in' and 'Mic' allowing me to plug a microphone into the Mini. The short USB cable on the iMic acts as an extension cable, so that I can bring the audio sockets to the front of the machine for easy access.

But having said all of that, HM's Logitech headset looks pretty darn good.

I read a few reviews on Amazon which put me off the logitech one also its USB only although its tempting as I know this one will work.

I was thinking of a plantronics, I prefer the full ear cover I think I may go with the plantronic 650 which is a standard headset with 3.5mm jacks on the mic and headphones but it comes with a USB adaptor. If that works great if not I grab an iMic as well.

http://tinyurl.com/3dxzfz

Best bit is I was looking to spend around £50+ on a decent pair of headphones, and both of the options you've suggested come in well under. even if I later have to buy the iMic.

Thanks for our help once again guys. Cool

My iMic arrived today JohnnyBoy.

Excellent little gadget and its working a treat being able to switch between headphones and speakers now without continually unplugging.

Thanks for the suggestion once again.

Cool
