Since yesterday the alphabet comes like this:
abcdefghijkl,noparstuvzxyw
and the numbers 1 to 0 come like this:
&" ' (⨕ !

This suggests that my qwerty keyboard is typing azerty !!!

Can you please tell me what I must do to get back to normal. I tried restarting the Mac. No change. I tried choosing a different encoding type (from "automatic" to "Western Mac OS Roman" No change.
No change when using Word instead of TextEdit.

Please help me, it's urgent!

If it's a wired keyboard, try actually unplugging it from your Mac for a minute.

If wireless, new batteries?

I still don't know what caused this malfunction, but I found how to fix it and I am happy to share that with other forum users to save them a lot of time and stress.

Open Sys Pref > Language & Text > Input sources
Put "British" at the top of the list, and enable "Show Input menu in menu bar"
This will create a tiny british flag on the far right of the menu bar, just next to the date & time.

Next time the Mac flips from qwerty to azerty, the flag becomes french and can be manually reset to british.
