I have been thinking of up grading my older mini -- with more memory a new 500G hd to replace the 120

My question is --Is it worth the investment -- or would i be better off getting a new one ?

Just how old is "older"?
If it is capable of running a modern up-to-date operating system such as, say a 2009 mini then it might be worth it. This could get you another 2-3 years of good service.
By then I think a new mini will be a lot different then what we have come to expect.

It would appear from your minimal information that you have an early 2009 mini.
Here are the specs. http://support.apple.com/kb/sp505
If this is correct then you could possibly run the newest operating system 'Mavericks', which by the way is free.
But in order for it to run half decently you would need to max out the memory (4GB).

The early 2009 Mac Mini (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)

See: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-2-duo-2.0-early-2009-nvidia-specs.html

I have one and I installed the limit of 8 GB RAM. I also exchanged the original 120 GB drive (which broke) for a 320 GB unit some time ago. The machine runs fully loaded, 24/7.

It is the earliest Mac Mini which can run OS/X 10.9 Mavericks.
