I just thought I'd let you guys know I purchased a late 2012 21.5" iMac. I purchased it used through Kijiji and saved about $375. I paid $1000.

It's just the base model, but I also purchased a USB 3 enclosure and a Samsung 840 256GB SSD that I use as a boot drive. I would have liked to have purchased a bigger SSD and installed it inside, but honestly. if I were going to spend that much money, I would have ordered a new iMac with a Fusion drive. My read speeds are about 350MB/s, so it's still quite fast and the external drive means I can use it to boot from any of my Macs. The enclosure I purchased also supports Firewire 800.

Download Blackmagic for free from the App store to test your drive.
It's a fun utility. The interface looks awesome and it's dead simple to use.

So far I'm really enjoying it. I have my 2007 mini hooked up right beside it with a 20" Apple Cinema Display and without question the new iMac display is substantially nicer. So much brighter, so vibrant.

I thought I'd tidy up the desk by retiring the mini, but so far I've been enjoying having 2 computers side by side. I could extend my iMac desktop with the 20" ACD but I really enjoy having 2 docks etc. Smile

Later on this year I may get another large SSD and install it inside the iMac and then put the 256GB SSD into the mini, just to give it a few more years life. SSDs are definitely the way to go. If you've been thinking about getting one, you probably should. They are a nice treat.

You could try using both with one keyboard and mouse with Synergy.

That looks pretty cool and I like the idea much better than an extended desktop.

I am however looking to simplify things and tidy things up a bit. That was the purpose of getting the iMac.

I have 2 more weeks of night school (Instrumentation) and I'll likely tidy things up and move the mini. During school it's nice to be able to have school work up on one screen while having another to control iTunes etc.

As much as running a command center appeals to me, A tidy office appeals to the GF. I'm probably going to sell the mini. I normally don't sell things, but I really have no need for it now, even my home theatre needs are taken care of with Apple TV. We even have 2 Playstation 3 systems that used to be used for home theatre, but they never get turned on either now with Apple
TV.

I sound like a spoiled kid, but believe me, I appreciate everything I have. Likely I'll sell the stuff for cheap to younger people at work who are just getting a start in life.
