Problem with fan after upgrading processor

Hi all.

I am the happy owner of a macmini Model A1176 core duo that I use in my work as a music teacher. Today I made ​​the upgrade from the core duo processor 1.66 to 2.66 Core 2 duo following this guide:

All was well. The macmini works with the new processor, but there is a big problem. The fan is running too fast and it makes a lot of noise. I have installed istats and I see that it is all the time at 5500 rpm. The processing temperature is 33 - 40 degrees. Normal.

Also I installed a utility to control the fan speed but I have not managed to do anything.

What have I done wrong? Maybe I connected something wrong? What I can do? Do I open it again?

It's been a while since I upgraded one of the older Mac minis, but I sort of remember a temperature sensor needing to be connected up near the battery. Did you reconnect that wire? It will make the fan run at full blast if it isn't connected.

Actually on that model he needed to do one thing he didn't do.

You need to replace the heatsink and sensor that heat sink that you have is not designed for that fast of processor and that is why your fan is going nuts replace the heatsink and fan from a core 2 duo mac mini from that same form factor and you should be fine remember the heat sensor is set to the 1.66 ghz processor so when you upgraded its telling your fan hey this 1.66 ghz machine is over heating turn on the fan full blast

Mine still has the original heat sink, and doesn't have that problem. I haven't read about a single person that upgraded the CPU that also changed the heat sink.

I would check to make sure the thermal sensor is connected, and also make sure that the connection isn't broken.

You can run it with the top off to make sure everything is good, before putting it back together.

Thank you all for the answers. Indeed, this connector was unplugged. I am very happy with the change of the processor Is it normal 70 degres? I hope so.

Now I have a little problem. Every time I connect the macmini to the power, before pressing the switch button, it starts alone.

As a side effect also happens the following. I don't know if it's related or not. When I disconnecting the macmini from the power it forgets the time and the wifi password. It says that the day is before January 2008. I thought the problem was the battery but I changed last Friday with the processor.

Any idea what to do to fix it?

do not turn the mini off. if the mini never turns off you will not lose the date.

check the replacement battery make sure it has full power maybe you in a bad one.

I have check my photo and there is a thin metal next to the battery in different way than mooblie photo.

The battery is new, but I will check it tomorrow.

Guys, problem solved. Thank you very much for everything.

Finally the other day I put a new battery that was fully discharged! And I do not understand why. Anyway ...

Now everything is solved. Thinking about installing lion or mountain lion with a hack. I have read something about install on an external hard drive (from my iMac) and I could boot from the macmini.

Is it possible? Is it worth it?

Now that I have a newer mini, that is 10.7 or up, I really don't like 10.7. But it's already configured, so I just press the button on the remote and I'm in Plex so I don't have to deal with it too much.

If it could run 10.6 I'd be much happier with OS X.
