I think Apple could be successful at just about anything. The reason I say this is soooo many people already have soooo many Apple products. If they come out with any product that compliments/works with the Apple ecosystem ie. Apple TV they have a winner.
The new product is not only cool, it adds value to whatever you already own.

A watch is a pretty visible product (just like white earbuds), but you can usually keep a watch concealed when you want to. I think an Apple watch would recreate that "cool" product to own feel, once again.

I have no need for it, in fact the iPhone IMHO helped to kill off the need for a watch.

I think this will be little more than a fashion accessory, it will be like digital burberry -something you might see one of the Kardashians sporting along with their white iPhone and iPad mini neatly peering from expensive handbag...

Christ! I've been fooling with ical server and windows clients for far too long today, rant over! Wink

I saw something over on UK TV about a similar product, not sure if it was Apple or not. The watch is a digital bluetooth accessory which you can use with your iphone or ipad. You leave your phone in your bag or pocket and interface to it via the watch. Test messages, emails, notifications, songs etc all show up on the watches display, as does the time. Wink

I can see it being an awesome workout (exercise) device, especially with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Imagine you're at the gym, work, house etc. and you don't want to miss a call, but you don't want to carry your iPhone. You could potential take the call, get the message, listen to your music collection through the watch. If you get out of range of your cell phone or other precious Apple devices, you'll be alerted.

I wouldn't look at the device so much as a watch, as it is a wearable, receiver/transmitter. Displaying the time is one very small feature. With Siri (which I'm not a huge fan of yet) you have the potential to control anything. The watch doesn't even need a touch interface. Of course we'd want an awesome touch interface as well.

anther one I forgot which they showed was the watch also doubled as a headset, so you just raise your arm to your mouth and said "Ring Bandit" the iPhone in you pocket ring's Bill's number and you talk and listen from your wrist watch.. right from every 60's scifi show. Cool

From Blake's 7 (70's UK Sci fi show)

It will have Siri on the watch, for sure Smile

Don't forget Dick Tracy!

My Timex has earned it's time on my wrist. I doubt an iWatch, which sounds like a refinement of existing BT enabled watches, would be able to replace it.
