That and some software for housekeeping. The Apple Timecapsule is the most common, it can also be found on common NAS platforms like the Netgear ReadyNAS. If you are the DIY type there is also Netatalk for the various Unix OSes. (The timemachine client is part of OSX since 10.6 maybe earlier) |

Timemachine is 2 parts a client or clients (aka the Mini) and the server (Timecapsule or NAS).
If you connect the disk to the Mini you can ask timemachine to back it up to the server.
The server is usually connected to the clients via Ethernet, WiFi or USB.
If you are thinking of buying a disk to make a server, then a NAS or Timecapsule is needed.
Another option is something like the Seagate Backup plus
