|
|
I just bought another Mac mini over the weekend. It's my fourth or fifth (lost track) one ever and I'm going to say that it's the quietest model of them all. I don't know what Apple did to the fan, read that it was somehow different here, but they must have changed the design in someway. I wonder if its using an asymmetrical design like the MacBook Pro with Retina display? I haven't compared it to the 2011 Mac mini's fan, but something seems improved under stress. I just can't wait to put a SSD in this sucker. The iPad might even be louder.
What do you guys think about the fan noise levels now? _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Strange, you answer his question by a completely off-topic question and then say I'm belligerent for suggesting one of the possible reasons? Curious.
Blazer, I just picked up the new mid-level. Still have the 2.0 QC which does not have a discrete either, it has been incredibly silent as well unless it is churning out a HandBrake video. Not sure if the fan is different enough to be a real reason for this, but the lack of another heat generator such as the discrete is certainly one of the reasons. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

I looked at the fans in my 2011 and 2012 minis today, while upgrading the latter, and they do in fact look a little different. The fans blades in the 2012 Mac mini look larger and are spread further apart. The center bearing assembly also looks slightly larger and has more holes. They look the same as this picture posted in the article.

I don't know if they are rated differently, but there does appear to be a change in the design. You could also be onto something about the integrated graphics eliminating another heat source. My 2011 and 2009 Mac minis were dedicated. I'm really going to take a closer look a temps now that my upgrades are finished.
Congrats on your new Mac mini! Why do YOU keep buying them?
Why do I keep buying Mac minis? Cause I like them. They also hold their value well, which helps in trading up.
Thanks for the reply ez061111! Post back if you hear any differences while using Handbrake. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini
