OWC has announced the immediate availablity of their OWC DDR3L 1600MHz Memory Kits for the new 2012 Mac minis. According to the company, these memory kits offer a savings of up to 67 percent on comparable sized memory upgrades from Apple. They also offer a memory configuration of 12GB that isn't available from the company. So, here's a rundown of the memory kits they are offering.

OWC 8GB DDR3L Memory Kit (2 x 4GB memory modules) $49.99. Replaces existing factory installed 2 x 2GB memory modules with 8GB total memory at 50 percent lower cost vs. same sized factory 8GB option costing $100.

OWC 12GB DDR3L Memory Kit (4GB + 8GB memory modules) $85.99. Replaces existing factory installed 2 x 2GB memory modules with 12GB total memory. This kit offers 50 percent more RAM at 14 percent lower cost vs. factory 8GB option costing $100.

OWC 16GB DDR3L Memory Kit (2 x 8GB memory modules) $114.99. Replaces existing factory installed 2 x 2GB memory modules with 16GB total memory at 67 percent lower cost vs. same sized factory 16GB option costing $300.

Additional savings versus factory options are also available for customers who take advantage of OWC's memory trade-in rebate program, which offers up to $20.00 cash back for Apple factory memory modules.

Good news.

You can also put these memory modules in the 2011 Mac mini. They clock down to 1333MHz. Just don't mix speeds ie. one 1600MHz chip, one 1333 MHz chip.

After seeing some Geekbench scores for the quad-core i7-based Mac minis, I'm seriously thinking about getting one and upgrading to 16GB. Take that and a Fusion drive and you'll have yourself one little rocket of a system. Who really even needs a Mac Pro at that point?
