Mac Mini Gets Fusion Drive

As you may know, Apple released new Mac minis today with faster processors and USB 3.0. They also began offering their new Fusion Drive in the high-end Mac mini as a $250 BTO option. This drive combines a traditional 1TB hard drive with 128GB worth of flash storage for faster performance. It also automatically and dynamically moves your frequently used files to the flash storage for quicker access to the files.
Fusion Drive automatically and intelligently manages your data so that frequently used apps, documents, photos, and other files stay on the faster flash storage, while infrequently used items move to the hard drive. You'll enjoy shorter boot times, and as the system learns how you work, you'll see faster application launches and quicker file access. Best of all, you don't have to do a thing to make it happen.
So, what do you guys think about the new Fusion Drive option? We think it's a pretty good deal all things considered.

Getting one when I get one. I think it's a good deal as someone looking into SSDs as another option. That being said, I would also like to see them enable Power Nap in Mountain Lion for Macs with a Fusion Drive. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Is it 5400 rpm? The part that isn't solid state? The technology seems really cool.

There are a couple 2.5" 750GB hybrid drives that spin at 7200rpm, but I'm betting this one spins at 5400rpm. Based on what other 2.5" 1TB drives spin up at.
I'm actually impressed with the price and other specs of the drive. Most of the 2.5" hybrid drives that I've seen only come with 4GB-8GB solid state storage. This is a 1TB drive with 128GB for only $250. I don't think that is bad. Especially from a company that sells 16GB memory upgrades for $300. _________________ 2011 Mac mini with 8GB of RAM

Thanks, yeah that does seem like a fair deal to me as well. |

It really sounds like the best of both worlds. In fact, I think they should be putting them in the new MacBook Pros too. If they could have fitted in there height wise.

I wonder who is actually making the drive for Apple? It sounds like it could be something from the Samsung/Seagate alliance.

I can't wait to read about some real world experiences with these drives.
