Tightened Supply of Mac minis Suggesting Update?
Tuesday, October 09, 2012

Well, there are a couple new rumors out there starting to float around about the Mac mini getting updated soon. This is based on a new report by Apple Insider, which shows a tightened supply of the Mac mini and Mac mini Server at various third-party resellers in the United States. They have it being shown as either "sold out or on order" at Amazon, MacMall, MacConnection and J&R. The report also goes on to say that supply has tightened in Germany.

So, does this mean that an imminent update is on the way? It's really hard to say simply based on supply fluctuations. Sometimes they can be a direct indicator, and other times they are absolutely meaningless. Plus, we really haven't heard any other concrete information as of late. We definitely have our fingers crossed though. How about you?

Hope it does get an update. But it has sometimes been well over a year between updates in the past so don't want to get my hopes up too much just yet.

I would consider trading up Mac minis again for Ivy Bridge and USB 3.0. They could always bring the old SuperDrive back too. That's something that would make a lot of people happy. I sort of doubt that would ever happen, but I still think a desktop computer should have the ability to burn and watch DVDs out of the box. In my estimation they dumped it too soon in favor of pushing people to iTunes. It would also be nice to see Apple update the iMac and Mac Pro. The entire desktop line is just lingering these days.

I'm sitting pretty at the moment with two 2011 Mac minis. That being said, I would be growing very impatient without them. I know we sort of live in a mobile computing world now, but Apple's upgrade cycle for desktop Macs has become painfully slow. It's borderline non-existent. Good lord! Just imagine if Dell, HP or Lenovo took a year off between processors from Intel. They would be ridiculed and left in the dust for dead. Think about the enterprise market. And what about servers? The Mac mini is basically their only server. I just don't think you can neglect machines like this and stay competitive. Sooner or later customers and businesses move on. If you can't get the latest and greatest here, you get it or settle for something else there.

If true, I don't see it happening until Apple reports their earnings on the 25th. Then I see them updating the iMac at the same time. This will give them a stronger quarter next time around. This quarter is probably going to look really weak in the desktop department. Even though their margins were probably better off using Sandy Bridge.

I would even settle for native support and BYOEBR.

I would be more excited if it was Apple with the pushed back ship dates.

Sounds awesome, but that's a pretty big gap between showing and shipping.

Rumors have a new iMac coming. I;m not sure that bodes well for a Mac mini update this time around. To be honest, I don't remember them releasing new iMacs and Mac minis together. Maybe only like one or two times in the past six years. I hope so though. Both need it BAD.
