Black outs, brown outs or spikes can damage your computer or HD. If a file is being written during an outage it can corrupt the file and/or system. I keep a small back up on all my Macs at home/work, just enough to warn me and begin a shut down after about 10 minutes. I use a Tripp-Lite system that displays the power fluctuation, I'm amazed at the variance during the day. _________________ iMac 24" 2.4 GHz 4GB | Logitech S530 | Z-2300 speakers | NewerTech Guardian MAXimus RAID

Plus, OS X being a disk based operating system, it just about always has some sort of files open that are related to the OS at any given time.
A laptop might be a better choice in that kind of environment.

Marv, if your area is prone to blackouts a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a must.
I suggest APC

I own 3 UPS units and my area has reliable power. |

Btw you can get an entry level ups for as little as $50. The models I own are ~$120 they regulate the power and keep a consistent 120v power source. |
