|
|
A few years ago I built a PC with a Dual-Core E8400 processor running at 3.0 GHz and with 4 GB of RAM. With my older MacBook Pro being given to a family member soon, I'd like to replace it with a Mac mini that's in the same ballpark of performance as my PC.
Is there a way to gauge whether the current minis are at least close to the performance of my PC? The minis use the i5 processor--would a 2.5 GHz be equal to a 3.0 E8400 Dual-Core? |

The current i3 and i5 CPUs are about two generations newer than the E8400 you had, so it would be more than equal to the old CPU.

So an i5 running at 2.5 GHz would be equivalent (or possibly better) than my E8400 running at 3.0 GHz?
That would be great to know I could replace this mini-tower PC with something smaller and much more portable.
One more question...hard drive access speed is supposed to be slower when running Windows from BootCamp. Would adding a Thunderbolt-based external hard drive help? |

Yes, an i5 would clean the E8400s clock, as it were.
I haven't heard about the hard drive access being slower in Bootcamp, so I can't say. If Windows supports Thunderbolt then you could do that.

Thank you!!! I wanted to see a chart like that but everyone I asked (except, obviously, here) didn't know of one. I can really evaluate the performance of my PC's processor and video card with that of the new Mac minis and iMacs.
I appreciate everyone's response. |
