Its such a shame this Mediasonic enclosure
(HFR2-S3B) is no longer available. I'm now
using it with four 4TB Hitachi 7200 RPM
Discs with a RAID 1+0. Just because it
doesn't have Thunderbolt is no reason
to discontinue it. They've replaced it with
an enclosure that uses eSATA and USB 3.

Before I installed the four 4TB Discs, I
had copied (cloned) my previous near
4TB's of data to another Enclosure
using USB. It took over 111 hours
to copy using the App. Carbon Copy Cloner.
Then when I copied back the near 4TB's
of data to the Mediasonic using Firewire
800 it took slightly less than 27 hours.

The top figure is the elapsed time for
the finished clone using USB 2.0 and
the bottom figure is the FW800 clone.
BIG difference.

Anyone who doubts the sepiorarity of
Firewire 800 over USB 2.0, hear it is.
I guess Mediasonic dropped this
Firewire 800 enclosure in favor of
the much less expensive and also
very fast USB 3 connection version.
I can't say that I blame them though
what a shame!

I know your asking, why did he try
4TB Discs? Well, if Promise hadn't
been greedy and sold its Pegasus
R6 Thunderbolt Enclosure with
those OVERPRICED tiny 1 TB Discs
I would be using an R6. I'm not
going to buy six OVERPRICED
1 TB Discs then sell then on eBay
just for the pleasure of using their
enclosure. This is the kind of
monopoly stuff Apple pulls. I'm
sure Apple is getting a piece of the
action just like the iPhone deal
with AT&T.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting
that and old inexpensive enclosure
is still relevant. I have several
more modern expensive enclosures
that can't see more than 1.8 or
2.2 Terrabytes. The ones with
the pretty face and smile don't
always use the better chips. If
I see one of these Mediasonic
enclosures for sale on eBay
guess who's going to snap it up?
I suggest you think about doing
the same.

I can't believe this threads still
alive. This is probably the last
post........SAYONARA!

I spoke to soon, it is available, its now a
Sansdigital not a Mediasonic. Its the model
MobileSTOR MS4CT+ its got USB 3.0 as
well as eSATA and Firewire 800 & 400.
No Thunderbolt though. At least not yet.
Because it must meet Sansigital standards
its better looking and no longer has the
light show. Its also more expensive Amazon
sells it for around $209. HERES the specs.
The single Amazon review of the Sansdigital
enclosure doesn't jive with my experience
with the Mediasonic. Go figure. Anyway
its still over $100 less than the equivalent
enclosure from OWC. It now doesn't look
like a console refrigerator for a Toyota
micro van.

Anyway, in case anyones been interested
in this enclosure but didn't like the Mediasonic
name.......its now a Sansdigital.

Now "THIS post" should be the last post. Ha, ha, ha!!!

How quiet is the fan/box itself? Say if it were sitting on desktop next to your mac?

Its four feet from my head (ears).
Near my bed. I've never heard the fan.
Early on it made me wonder if it worked.

It works, its just quit. If you can hear it
its probably defective.

Thanks, might do that. I've got two boxes now, my guardian Maximu is quiet but the other box is much louder.

For that price, its so inexpensive
leaving it in the box in your closet
unused for six months to a year
makes sense.

You can't touch anything even close to
that enclosure for something like double
its price. Hell, I like it so much I bought
the Sans Digital version a few days ago.
If I had known it would have been on sale
I would have saved almost $100.00 over
the Sans Digital. The Sans Digital is better
looking and has USB-3 as well as a better
(more expensive) RAID chip. This Mediasonic
is the better deal.

Oh well!!!

Mountain Lion broke SansDigital's Software
RAID Manager/Disc Monitoring Utility. That
Utility stopped the MobileSTOR MS4CT+
enclosure from randomly disconnecting
which was a known bug with Apple's
OS's.

I now use it as a backup to another
enclosure so I don't have to worry
about it disconnecting. You might
not be so lucky. I can no longer
recommend the MobileSTOR till
that Utility is fixed. Don't hold
your breath. BTW, the current
brocken Utility is version 1.0.....

Well, I've been using the SansDigital for several
months now and it hasn't disconnected. It would
randomly disconnect on occasion but one day I
realized it had stopped. I'm not sure why or who
was truly to blame but its been solid as a rock. I
do miss using its RAID Monitoring Utility because
it feeds the info junkie inside of me but it truly
isn't necessary do to the Status Lights on the
front of the Enclosure.

This Enclosure has been a joy when I compare it
to all of the duds I've used over the years. I do
recommend it again but like in all of life sometimes
things ain't always perfect.

If I see it go on sale again for a giveaway price
I'll let y'all know.
