In your Internet settings on your AE are you connecting to the modem using DHCP, Static or PPPoE? Then look under Network Settings which is selected DHCP & NAT, DHCP Only or Bridge Mode?

Which device Modem or AE is running your DHCP server?

I've had similar problems to you
off and on over the years. It was
my Internet Providers "Modem".
I'm on my third one in five years.

Everything will be fine then I'll loose
my connection. Then I'll get it back
then loose it again. It gets worse and
worse till it (the modem) fails.

Its now on a line conditioned battery
backup with the rest of my stuff. I
don't think its electrical spikes though.
I think the modems overheat and slowly
die.

Can you borrow another modem and
try it. You'll need to call your Internet
Service Provider while your changing
it out. You'll need to give the ISP some
serial numbers and the model number
of the modem to the ISP so they can
help you set it up.
