I was getting worried when I didn't see the 2000+ lighted Christmas tree this year. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

|
|
I have two AppleTVs; a 40GB first generation model, and a 160GB model from version 3.0 software days (also first gen).
I have used ATV-USB free hack to modify both, and to help a friend with her 160GB model.
Notes are here:
http://blog.scottnolan.org/2010/02/24/appletv-update-3-0-2-and-xbmc-boxee-ssh/
Initially I did it just to get Boxee, XBMC, NitoTV, ssh, and Sapphire working.
It turned my AppleTVs from iTunes only to iTunes plus many, many other things. I was using the scp command to copy files to my AppleTVs from our big media server (a Mac Mini with huge iSCSI drive served off a Linux based NAS unit).
More recently, I wanted to directly access the movies on my Media Server (Mac Mini) so I figured out how to use NitoTV and some commands to mount a SMB share I configured on my Mac Mini:
http://blog.scottnolan.org/2011/01/31/mounting-smb-media-on-appletv/
Now we watch movies over the network from the mucking big drive... it's awesome.
I was surprised that the double network latency hit from TranquilPC based Linux iSCSI share to Mac Mini, to SMB over TCP share to XMBC on AppleTV was not noticeable, but it is not. To be fair, the Mac Mini is enjoying GigE wired networking from the iSCSI share; and the AppleTV is using an 802.11n wireless network to talk to the Mini. _________________ Apple Mac Mini dual 1.83GHz, 1GB, 160GB +1TB iSCSI network drive, SuperDrive, Edirol UA-1EX, Onkyo M-508, AR-P315 speakers

strange Apple is trying to be Green and by streaming form NAS use much less power.
It would be nice to have NAS where you can iTunes Server with iTunes Home Sharing on to be able to stream from nas instead from a computer and use much less power. |
