So, we learned from today's un-"stevenote" that Apple will finally equip at least some new Macs sold with USB 3.0.
My question is this: will the incorporation of the revised USB have any improvement effect on USB storage devices, such as USB hard drives, thumb drives, and camera card readers? If the answer is "no", does that mean that computer users of these peripheral devices will have to wait until newer versions of the devices come out to see improved data transfer performance?
And what about scanners and printers? |

If the device (lets say an USB harddrive) is fast enough, it will take advantage. But most harddrives dont work that fast, so in that case you gain no speed at all. But if it was - lets say - an SSD, able to deliver more than 50 MB/s, you will notice a big difference. |

Scanners and printers will work just fine, but those will almost never make use of full USB 2.0 speeds let alone USB 3.0. As far as hard drives most can easily hit 100MB/s or higher in 2.5" and even higher in 3.5" but few get above say 200MB/s unless you are using 10k RPM+ drives or striped RAID, they have been limited by the USB 2.0 bandwidth. As far as thumb drives the ones that use USB 3.0 that are out simply use an SSD as traditional flash drive designs can't get near those speeds, at least for now. Using anything USB 2.0 will not get above 480 Mbps, it's a limitation of the hardware. So to get USB 3.0 speeds you must have a USB 3.0 device.

THanks for the feedback thus far...
Here's another USB 3 question:
With the inclusion of the newer USB 3.0 standard on the newest Apple hardware, does this mean that there's now enough bandwidth available to use USB 3.0 to connect to an external scratch disk for video editing or other professional media work?
I occasionally work with Final Cut Studio. |

| i wouldn't use a usb drive for final cut work it's still to slow i would recommend a thunderbolt drive if you get a macbook with thunderbolt and the usb 3.0 configuration usb 3.0 will help with time machine though greatly and especially with iphones and ipads and even usb thumb stick media copys |

Are you referring to USB 3.0?

USB 3.0 has been out for less than 2 weeks on Macs. I would think it's a bit premature to write USB 3.0 off for use with Final Cut. Even if it is horrible today, there may yet be software/firmware updates to come. Although it's not recommended, some people use USB 2.0 drives with FC.
Here is a thread on the Apple forum that asks that exact question. It still has not been answered, but you may want to bookmark the thread and see how things turn out.

USB 3.0 is much faster than FW 800 and eSATA (which pros have been using for years). That being said, how USB handles data may still be a concern. |

it's not that see usb thumb drives and hard drives have a auto power saving feature where the drive will automatically go into a kind of sleep mode then the drive will re power up again now during a edit of a movie project with final cut you dont want your movie editing to freeze miss a few frames then continue on with your work.
And even if they update usb 3.0 the usb 3.0 hard drive will always go into sleep mode
So it still doesn't matter |
