Our school district here in Virginia is going with Windows laptops next year. The decision was all based on price. They really wanted Macs, but just couldn't afford them. I'm really thinking Apple should have kept that old white MacBook around. Because there is large barrier to entry now. Especially if you want a larger 13"-15" screen. Anyways, many of us were disappointed with the news. Sad

Yeah, viruses and product activation are concerns. I don't think they are worried about upgrading to Windows 8 though. It's just the cheap way out of getting laptops in volume.

It's sort of sad, but PCs do have their place. There are many environments in which I would use a PC over a Mac.

There are viruses, maintenance cost etc. but there are lots of things to factor in. If its not in the budget for this year, that's what matters this year. Having only 1/3 the number of Macs vs. students/computers needed doesn't work either.

Even at $999 the MacBook was expensive for an entry level unit.

It's neat to see the iPad starting to fill in the gap. It will be even more interesting once OSX and iOS come closer together as well.

Why aren't these schools using Linux? They could save a ton of money on software and their systems would be more secure to boot.

One of my jobs is to keep our youth center compter lab going. It's small about 12 PCs and 2 Macs. The Macs with the guest accounts have been flawless, not one down day and no expensive software to install to build them. The PCs, well I won't go there. I will say we'll be adding more Macs.
