Other World Computing has announced the release of their DIY Kit for adding a second hard drive or SSD to the 2011 Mac mini. The kit includes a 5-piece Mini Toolkit, Logic Board Removal Tool, 4 rubber grommets, 4 Hex screws, Mac mini Flex Cable and installation manual. It's basically everything you need to perform the upgrade. They also posted a video, which you can view down below, that walks you through the entire upgrade process. The DIY Kit is available now and priced at $49.99.

| Not bad. You could still probably do it for less, but it's $20 less than the kit from iFixit. |

I wish they hadn't taken so long to make this. I would have gladly bought this for the extra cost over the single cable.

Actually, it was introduced by iFixit much earlier than April 2012 : I bought mine on November 3rd, 2011 !; by then it was $20 more expensive : $69.95.
But for months, it was hard to get since any new supply they got went "out of stock" within 24 hours !
That's actually this first kit which encouraged me to to develop an Optical Internal Superdrive upgrade for the Mac Mini 2011, although I had to buy some different parts (mostly the ODD plastic bracket). |

Used one of these kits to put a second drive in my shiny new Mid 2011 Mini (2.5Ghz/500). Had sense enough to copy OWC's install video to my iPad for reference along with iFixIt's awesome iPad app.
This is not an install for the faint of heart! I've been taking Minis apart since they were first introduced so I felt pretty comfortable. Provided tools were perfect and the new SATA cable is what you are really paying for along with the goofy logic board removal tool.
Tricky parts for me were getting the original drive (called "lower" by System Profiler) back in place and re-seating the Airport antenna. If the outboard tabs don't line up perfectly, you don't have it in place correctly. Part of the antenna fits under the lip and part fits over the lip.
As SSD prices drop, I may put one in place as the OS boot drive with a 7200 RPM drive to hold my iTunes library but that is a project for another day!
As usual, OWC's service was first class!
