Western Digital today announced the release of their My Passport Studio 2TB portable hard drive for Mac users. This drive features a USB 2.0 and dual FireWire 800 interface, which allows users to daisy chain additional drives or other peripherals such as HD camcorders. It also features hardware-based encryption, password protection software, and a sturdy all-metal design. The My Passport Studio 2TB portable hard drive has a suggested retail price of $299.99.

Nice looking drive.
2TB is awesome for a 2.5" drive.
Likely it's not the fastest drive, but that's the price you pay for 2TB. |

| It's probably just as fast as any other 5400RPM drive, only thicker. I read something like it uses four 500GB platters @ 15mm. So don't plan on putting one in your Mac mini or MacBook Pro anytime soon. I always like to see 2.5" drive technology improve though. Even though most of the shift is towards solid state drives now. |

I would pay $199 but not $299.

That won't happen for quite some time. Take a look at LaCie drives. Some 1TB FW800 2.5" drives are over $199. |

| This is by far the most elegant external HDD WD has ever made. ...but I agree with others, at the cost it should have included a Thunderbolt interface. |

here is the only problem when you can build a hard drive especially a external for 280.00 and get the same thing as this.
299.99 is crazy because by the time you get taxes on this drive it becomes quite expensive. |

There are times when the design is unique and people are willing to pay a bit more just for the look. Usually it's Lacie people seem most willing to pay a price hike on, and it is likely due to how cool the drives look on the Lacie rack. I also remember the drives that used to be shaped like the old Mac Mini (I think Iomega made them), and how good the Mac and HDD's appeared when stacked up - that was another one people were likely willing to pay for the design.
Western Digital did a great job with this design, and it is all metal. Sure, one can build an external HDD with a metal enclosure, but it's hard finding an elegant enclosure with Firewire for a low price, not to mention that most enclosures won't hold an HDD bigger than 750GB or 1TB.
Anyways, as cool as this HDD might look, I'm not buying. The Air has become my main computer, and it only supports old USB and Thunderbolt. |
