Hi, Suddenly my old google earth starts to act weird: open its window and quickly close it before anything! Just keep doing that... So I download and install the latest version (6.2) and still the same craze! Anyone could help? Thanks

Try creating a new user account and see if Google Earth still misbehaves while using that user account.

If it behaves, then something is messed up in your preferences/settings. Deleting(or just remove) the Google Earth folder in Application Support, and anywhere else should do the trick.

If it still misbehaves then something might be wrong that is more in depth than just your settings.

Hey SC, Thanks for reply.

I removed the GE folder in my account's Library folder TO TRASH CAN (not delete it). And started GE, but it again opened the window and quickly closed... So I removed GE folder back to its place. Should I just delete GE folder and not keep it in trash can? I kind of thought I'll need it later? Any suggestion? Thanks

If you have a great deal of saved data, then I would keep it.

Don't forget to try the new user account to see if maybe something else is fubar'ed.

SC, I think I have tried everything: new account, delete GE folders, delete GE.app and download/reinstall new version, ... None works.

Found one thing susceptible: after I install a new version (GE, GE Web Plug-in, and Chrome), I see no GE web plug-in.app in Application folder. I tried install the plug-in again, app still not show up. I guess the plug-in is not installed successfully and so GE doesn't work. Is the plug-in required for GE to work? Any hint on this? Thanks

Hmmm, I couldn't say. With no other system changes and then an app stops running, usually would point to something being corrupted in the app or the prefs. Since you have removed the old App Support folder and reinstalled the app, and tried a new user, all those things can be eliminated.

The only other thing that I keep thinking of is that it's crashing at lauch, which is a problem exhibited by systems infected with the Flashback malware. You can check for it, by just pasting the relevant line into the terminal and checking the results.

Quote:
That said, detection comes down to issuing the following defaults
read commands in Terminal (F-Secure suggests only the first and
last; the others extend the technique from Safari to Google Chrome,
Firefox, and iCab). In each case, if you see “does not exist” at
the end of the response from each command, you are _not_ infected.
(The defaults read command is entirely safe — it’s just
attempting to determine whether some data exists in the Info.plist
file within each application package.)

defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
defaults read /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
defaults read /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
defaults read /Applications/iCab\ 4/iCab.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment
defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

A few days ago I have gone to a site to check the Flashback malware and test result was clean, not infected. Any way, I followed your lead and checked with Terminal for all the lines in your quote. The response is all "does not exist" except the last line with "MacOSX" which gave no return. I even checked the last line alone again and it gave no response. Why? Then I entered a line to check "google earth.app" and it say "does not exist".

What went wrong?

Something I just thought of, is to check the crash logs in the Console.

While it's usually all Greek to me, there might be something there that will let you know why it's misbehaving.

Thanks, SC. Found console messages which does look like Greek! I saw many lines (tens if not hundreds) that log GE event, some indicate 'error'. All the details are beyond my comprehension. Is there any way I can make a copy of the GE related log (I tried highlight lines and right-click for copy, but it doesn't allow) and post here for solution/suggestion?

(really puzzled as this happens so suddenly and not for all the time before)

I would imagine you should be able to copy and paste. Try the Edit menu, or command c to copy it.

It is certainly missing the plug in, but it looks like there is an issue with LogMeIn. So you might wanna see if that app updated itself or some other sort of issue has cropped up with it.

It also appears to be some sort of issue with 32 or 64 bit, but I'm not sure if it's relevant.

Here are what I think the problems lie, but don't know what's wrong and how to fix:

1. "Google Earth[6191] Cannot find executable for CFBundle 0x26665ab0 </Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Unused> (not loaded)" __ I checked the folder 'Unused' and it's empty, nothing in there.

2. "Google Earth[6191] Error loading /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/LogMeInSafari64.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LogMeInSafari64: dlopen(/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/LogMeInSafari64.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LogMeInSafari64, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/LogMeInSafari64.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LogMeInSafari64: mach-o, but wrong architecture " __ Don't know what's wrong with the 'architecture'???

3. "Google Earth[6191] CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary." __ suspect if this issue resolved or ignored?

4. then all Classes are implemented in both "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/LogMeInSafari32.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LogMeInSafari32 and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/LogMeIn.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LogMeIn. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined. " __
Don't know if these are issues just caused by previous errors???

5. "com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[121] ([0x00xdb0db].com.Google.GoogleEarthPlus[6191]) Exited with exit code: 2" __ auto exit ???
