|
|
I switched our office pc to a mac mini running windows (I'm a traditional pc guy) and my question is whether it is ok to leave the mac on 24/7, as we used to do with our pc. We left the pc on because it would run the backup at night. Also, because some of the software we use is a pain to reboot, so it was easier to just leave it on.
The mac grows pretty hot. We've been shutting it down every night, and turning it back on every morning. Was hoping it would be ok to leave on without frying it. |

mine runs around 60 celsius up to 85 if I run Handbrake.
I use and recommend SMC fan control, it is free and great.

Should run fine. What do you consider to be running hot? Hot to the touch? Or hot by some sort of value reported by a CPU monitoring application?

| I just got everything set up, so haven't done any sort of bench-marking or heat checks with software yet. Just noticed the chassis seemed pretty hot to the touch. |

I believe the case is a part of the heat sink in the unibody minis.

I probably exaggerated a bit (not intentionally) when I said "hot". But yea, it is definitely "warm". Would be curious to know if anyone else runs theirs 24/7 and has done so for longer than a week.
I'll probably at least shut it down over the weekends. |

My mini runs 24/7. The only time its off is for a few
seconds when some type of software update requires
the mini to be restarted. If I'm not dong anything or
asleep the mini may also sleep but not necessarily. _________________ 2011 Mac mini 2.7 GHz i7 with

The aluminum is doing what it supposed to, it's dissipating heat. The more it does this, the less the fan needs to work.
I have never heard of a mini overheating... ever.
I've never even heard of a mini overheating from extreme abuse. ie. in a cabinet, not getting enough air, fan full of dust, transcoding video all day long.
Your mini is doing what it is supposed to do and it will do it 24 hours a day for many, many years. |
