I remember when my mother bought her first-generation white MacBook (with FireWire). You could use FireWire Target Disk Mode to automatically transfer user data from the "old" machine (her old iBook) to her then-new MacBook using Apple's Setup Assistant.
What about now? If my mother bought a new MacBook Air to replace her MacBook, is there still a way to automatically connect and transfer the user data? If so, how? |

I did what amounts to exactly that.
Connect your old Mac to your router via Ethernet Cat.5 or 6 cable.
Connect your Air to the same router via Ethernet Cat.5 or 6 cable.
In order to connect the Air you'll need a USB to Ethernet Adapter.
Apple makes an overpriced one that is 10/100Mbps. The best
aftermarket one is the "plugable Gigabit USB 2.0 Ethernet Adapter".
Its 10/100/1000Mbps but USB speed will compromise it.
In order to get the "Gigabit Lan" to work you must go to
their web site and download its drivers. Obviously you'll
download the drivers using another Mac and the zip file
to a thumb drive then to the Air. Its easiest to use the Apple
USB Ethernet Adapter but the choice is their.
Once the Air is attached to the Router along with the older Mac
launch (from the Air) the "Migration Assistant" App. located
in your Utilities folder located in your Applications folder.
Follow the prompts. It sounds difficult but couldn't be easier.

It really doesn't matter that its only 100 Mbps.
USB in use isn't much faster so you never get
anywhere near 1000Mbps.
Its nice that your adapter doesn't rob one of the
USB ports.
