I was told a SATA 3 SSD connector is different than the connector in my 2007 Mac Mini SATA. Is that true?
I know whatever I put in the mini will be limited to 1.5/GB but I was thinking a faster one would be better if I decide to upgrade the mini later on. A supplier said the sata 3 connectors were not backward compatible like the SATA 2.
On another note, has anyone ever managed to get a ssd and hd in a mini?

If your asking are the SATA I, II, III (1.5, 3 and 6 Gbit/s) plugs compatible,
my understanding is yes.
SATA 1.5, 3 and 6 are forward and backward compatible. However,
a SATA 6 Hard Drive on a SATA 1.5 Bus will work at SATA 1.5 speed.
A SATA 1.5 Hard Drive on a SATA 6 Speed Bus will work a SATA 1.5 Speed.
The slowest link in the SATA chain determines its speed. Understand,
most currently available Hard Drives work at a SATA 1.5 or 3 Gbit/s.

Thats what I have in my 2011 mini. The stock HD and an SSD.

Thanks billb. I picked up one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226236. Should be backward compatible and forward to my next system. I got an optical bay carrier and will put my hd in it and the ssd in the drive bay.
The carrier converts the DVD player PATA connector to a SATA. This may slow down the hd but I'm not sure. At least it will make migration simple

I did exactly that with the original
Intel mini. It worked great. I think
you'll be pleased.

Yes, the PATA connection in my mini ran slower
than the SATA connection. Put your Original HD
in the PATA location and put your SSD in your
Original HD's location.

Well, I put the hard drive in the DVD carrier and the ssd in the HD's place. Worked great...for a while. Today I noticed the HD was not showing up. I believe it's a connection problem because the Boot Camp partition does not show up.
Or, maybe it's because i used carbon copy cloner to clone the Mac partition to the SSD. When they're running together, could ther be some confusion?

No, CCC does a Block Level clone. CCC isn't your problem.
Its likely the Optical-Hard Drive Adapter thats bad or rather
is flakey. Sounds like its working intermittently or it was
working at first and now not at all.
Were you using a ground strap when sticking your hands
inside of your mini? It could be that but its likely a bad
Optical-HD adapter.

No, I did not use a strap 
The new ccc that I have has a new way to choose "block copy" in the prefs. I don't know if it was set or not. I'll pull it all apart again this weekend and check it out. I suspect bad connection in the new adapter.

I've used 4 different Optical-HD Adapters.
Two inexpensive adapters were flaky one
inexpensive one was good and the 4th
expensive one was my favorite....go figure.
This inexpensive one should be reliable.
See reviews. BTW, I didn't know Amazon
sold them.
If anyone orders one from Amazon make sure its
IDE-SATA or whatever your situation requires.

Perfect—I was just given a gift card from amazon. It says 9.5 mm...will that work in the 2007 case?
The one I bought was 12.7. I like the idea of the 9.5 for later upgrading in a laptop or newer mini.
Edited: Thought I would mention the SSD I got is fantastic. I can't realize its full potential in a sata port, but it seems well built and reliable. The OCZ petrol I returned was cheezy by comparison and it was DOA.

I would have bet money that any adapter fatter
than 9.5mm wouldn't fit. 12.7mm Optical Drives
as well as Adapters aren't supposed to fit. I would
get the 9.5 to be safe. It does limit the size of the
HD you can install, though. Philip Arcario may jump
in and verify the size of Optical/HD Adapter that'll
fit.
It just dawned on me, did you close up your mini
after you installed the Adapter with HD? If you did
that may have pinched your HD causing your problems.
If a platter that rotates is squished...it won't work.
It MAY be damaged.

The first adapter/caddy I bought was 12.7 and is the size that ifixit.com sells for my model. But they want $59! Phew. I'm hoping the 9.5 will bolt-up. My HD is a Toshiba 500gb 7200rpm and is 9.3 tall.
I have a sata usb enclosure I can check it with to make sure I didn't damage it.
