Upgrading an Intel mac mini from a 1.66 dual core to????

Hello everyone,

I was wondering what kind of 'uplift' in performance etc I would get If I were to upgrade my 2006 1.1 Intel 1.66 dual core processor to a higher specification, just want to give it some more 'zip'. What size can I go up to in terms of processor (C2D, etc...) also what memory could I increase it to, I believe i'm maxed out with 2 gig at present, I love my mini, but just wondering if it is beneficial to upgrade. Is it a matter of unclipping the processor, replacing with new one (with heatsink compound and heatsink) ????. I have upgraded my mini before with new memory and SSD but never the processor. I have seen a post somewhere , whereby the owner just dropped in the new processor and once he re-built, it showed a screen shot of his 'about this Mac' with new processor showing...is this a true reflection of what goes on?

I'm not sure what you mean by "is this a true reflection of what goes on?" because About This Mac is showing the correct CPU.

Upgrading the CPU in the mini is not for the faint of heart and there are a couple of things that can basically ruin your mini, if you break them. You can use any one of several C2D processors, however most people stick to the T7200 (2 GHz), T7400 (2.16 GHz), and the T7600 (2.33 GHz). Prices have come down rather dramatically recently, so even the T7600 is a good deal.

It was only that it seems so simple, in that you take out the CPU, replace, fire up the mini and check the 'about this mac', forgive me, I just thought it was i bit more involved. Thanks for the quick response.

parts are small and you can break things but by and by with the correct parts and it tools it is a simple drop in swap.

here is a mac pro I did while a completely different mac it was a straight drop in.
