Apple Releases OS X Mountain Lion Developer Preview

Apple today released a developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of their advanced desktop operating system. According to the company, Mountain Lion introduces Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Center to the Mac, as well as Notification Center, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring. Mountain Lion is the first Mac OS X release built with iCloud in mind for easy setup and integration with apps. It also introduces Gatekeeper, a revolutionary security feature that helps keep you safe from malicious software by giving you complete control over what apps are installed on your Mac. The preview release of Mountain Lion is available to Mac Developer Program members starting today. Mac users will be able to upgrade to Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store in late summer 2012.

"The Mac is on a roll, growing faster than the PC for 23 straight quarters, and with Mountain Lion things get even better," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "The developer preview of Mountain Lion comes just seven months after the incredibly successful release of Lion and sets a rapid pace of development for the world's most advanced personal computer operating system."

The developer preview of Mountain Lion also features the all new Messages app, which replaces iChat and allows you to send unlimited messages, high-quality photos and videos directly from your Mac to another Mac or iOS device. If you're a Mac OS X Lion user, you can download a beta of Messages starting today.

Wow, I didn't see this one coming. At least not so fast on the heels on Lion. I really thought this year was all going to be about the iPad 3 and iPhone 5, so I'm glad to see some focus on the Mac.

A smart move by Apple. It prevents Microsoft from gaining any momentum back with Windoze 8.

What up with Gatekeeper though? I don't like the sound of Apple controlling what I can download on my computer. It's a computer, not an iPad.

I'm pretty happy about this. I'm glad they already gave us messages. I don't care for Gatekeeper soon we won't be able to download anything that isn't "apple approved". That and ALL software updates will be through the store only. That piece of crap better get one heck of an overhaul.

I'm excited about Messages, AirPlay mirroring and most of all the Notifications Center. Gatekeeper, on the other hand, has me concerned. I don't like the general idea of everything having to go through the Mac App Store. I do think that day is getting closer though. This is the proof.

I guess you need an upgrade path, but I'm sort of sorry that I ever upgraded to Lion now. Which I have to be honest, is less than spectacular. Mountain Lion looks far more polished. Especially when it comes to blurring the lines between iOS and OS X.

I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about and look at pictures of the incredible OS.

So, I saw that I had to agree to terms to download(?) the pictures of 10.8. I stopped right there.

Therefore, I'm not sure about Gatekeeper, but if Apple tries to trademark that term, I'm the freaking Keymaster, and Zuul will be pissed when I tell him!

Trying to be honest here. It seems like most of this stuff (which looks really nice by the way) could have been built into Lion. I'm not saying that Mountain isn't worth it, but come on. Let's not release Microsoft Plus! packs every year now.
