38 Gb remaining... should i see a degradation of performance at this point...
if so... maybe this is the issue... maybe....
Its time for something bigger....
what is the current opinion of the group for a new HD
I was pretty happy with the performance of my system... so
solid state is not my need... I think I need to increase my capacity...
OR... should I trim down my internal drive and go external....
do you think my degradation of performance is due to full HD or
???
???
Thanks

38GB is more than enough for the Mac OS system to perform normally. You would only see slow-downs when the remaining size gets under the total RAM you have in the machine.
The HFS+/Mac OS Extended filesystem generally keeps most files defragmented-- via a process called ""Hot-File-Adaptive-Clustering" -- so you really shouldn't see any performance hit from the the amount of space remaining. That is, unless, of course, you are trying to save large files that require most of the remaining free space.
To gain more space, you might consider is archiving/deleting old and unused files. There's a nice piece of free software that will help map out what files are taking up the most space -- Disk Inventory X. See: www.derlien.com
A faster (7200) hard drive can help, overall, but can be pricey. _________________ Upgraded MacMini (1,1) 1.66Ghz Core Duo -> (2,1) 2.16Ghz C2D, 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, Airport Extreme "N" |
