Hey guys I use to come to this site back in the day when I had a mac mini like 6 years ago. I remember always being able to rely on the kind folks of this community to turn to when I needed guidance with something mac related. Well I just got a new mac mini i7 server edition and I come to you guys with a question. Can I use dual monitors with my version of the mac mini? And I am not talking about a fancy thunderbolt display. I am currently using an hp monitor and was wondering If i can dual screen with another monitor of a similar caliber. Thanks guys for any guidance you can provide me.

You can connect a DVI monitor (with the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter) or a HDMI monitor/HDTV via the HDMI port and add a second monitor via the thunderbolt port using a mini displayport to DVI or VGA adapter.

Here's a 2011 Mac mini with dual monitors.

What sort of video ports does your current HP display have? What is the model number? The reason I ask... is you may as well best use what you have and save money when purchasing an additional display.
Another question I would have is... do you want to pass audio to the external displays?

My current display has a vga and dvi port. I currently have my monitor hooked up to dvi with the included adapter. The model number is the HP w1907. I am not sure what you mean by passing audio to the external display? Do you mean using the displays internal speakers or something of that nature? Because at the moment I have my mac mini connected to my m audio studio monitors. I would continue to use my monitors because the whole point of the dual screens was for more functionality with music production in logic. But ya if you could enlighten me more I might be able to give you a better response. I appreciate the replies though, thanks a bunch guys.

So what you are saying is I just use the hdmi port and the thunderbolt port but use adapter to convert each port to dvi for the individual monitors right? Thunderbolt and mini display are the same thing essentially right?

You understood what I was referring to re sound.

I would look for another monitor with HDMI input, for your second display, unless you already have another DVI monitor, in which case a HDMI to DVI adapter is what you will need.

Arent I restricted to using the thunderbolt/mini display port for the second screen since I am already going out from hdmi to dvi with the hdmi port on my current screen?

Yes

Your mini display port is free to connect another monitor. With adapters you can convert the mini display port to VGA, DVI or HDMI via this port.

so I wanted to thank anyone who replied with the helpful comments. As a quick little update I wanted to post that I just made a purchase. I went with the bare minimum for what I needed and plan to use the thunderbolt to dvi method. The monitor I bought is this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824176200 and the adapter I bought was this one http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A?. Hopefully it all works! can't wait till it comes.
