SPARTANBURG, SC (WIS) - Spartanburg County deputies are looking for two men who sold a piece of wood painted to look like an iPad to a woman in a McDonald's parking lot.
Ashley McDowell, 22, told deputies she was buying food around 10:00 p.m. Monday when two men approached her in the parking lot trying to sell her an iPad or a laptop. According to a police report, the men showed McDowell a new iPad and told her they had bought several in bulk.
McDowell said she gave the men $180, and the men gave her a FedEx box out of the trunk of their car. When McDowell opened the box at home, she said she found a piece of wood painted black with an Apple logo.
McDowell told deputies one of the suspects had a gold tooth and was driving a white Chevy Impala with no rims and no tint. |

You know, I would still rather have a fake wooden iPad than a HP Touchpad. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Well, that is what she gets. Even if the guy had actually given her a real product it would be obvious to anybody that a situation such as that points to the item being stolen. I am sure she assumed she was buying a stolen item and she was willing to take the risk. Well, she was the one that got robbed. HA! _________________ Proud Cube owner. I agree with Am. She had to have assumed it was stolen. There is no need to feel sorry for her. That's what makes this a funny story.
The part that makes me laugh is that they took the time to make a fake wooden iPad. I bet it looked horrible. It would be humorous to see just how bad it looks. I bet she could put it on eBay |

IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!! TWICE!!! IN THE VERY SAME CITY!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!
Spartanburg, SC (AP) -- Buying the right electronics can be hard. Sometimes, it can be very hard.
Two Spartanburg women who thought they were buying a laptop computer for $250 in the parking lot of a gas station this week turned out to have purchased a package of paper wrapped in black tape.
Earlier this week, it was reported another Spartanburg woman in the parking lot of a restaurant had paid $180 for an iPad that turned out to be a painted block of wood.
In the latest case, the women were approached by a man who said he had received laptops in shipping boxes at discounted prices. When the women got home, they found they had a power cord and a stack of paper wrapped in black tape.
No arrests have been made.

Hahahaha...this is funny. It reminds me in the 1980s when they used to sell fake color TVs on store's parking lots to unsuspecting people. Once they got home and open the real tv box, it would be full of bricks, to give it the heavy feel of a new crt tv.
Now even if you were going to buy something on the streets like this, why wouldn't you look at the item before purchasing it. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

Likely because the person purchasing it, knows that they are likely purchasing stolen merchandise.
The same thing happens to people that end up buying rocks instead of crack. They know what they are doing is illegal, so they are not going to take the time to examine the item. It's a quick transaction. They take their chances. |

they show an ad for a 2000-3000 dollar speaker set from a mag like stereophile they show you real speakers that match the ad. they sell working speakers to you. for 400 so you figure you saved 1600 bucks. the speakers will play.
the scam is they are worth about 100 dollars. the fake is the ad from stereophile! _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

I haven't had to deal with them since I moved away from LA fourteen years ago, but I always figured they were selling junk speakers as high end speakers.
