Firefox 9.0 Brings Improvements for Lion

Mozilla has released Firefox 9.0 for Mac. According to the company, this update brings improved support, theme integration and two-finger swipe navigation (swipe left to go forward a page and right to back a page) for Mac OS X Lion. It also brings improved JavaScript performance and standards support for HTML5, MathML, and CSS. Firefox 9.0 for Mac weighs in at 30.8MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

I see they have implemented native fullscreen though. Sad

Chrome is still the best in my book. For Windows and Mac.

I'm not a big fan of Firefox anymore. Chrome has sort of taken of its place. In fact, I'm even liking it way more than Safari these days. You may laugh, but IE 10 isn't that shabby either. I would maybe put it in second place.

Firefox 9.0 is working nicely on my new Mini and my MBP, although I had to shoe horn it in. It just would not replace the the old Firefox 8 in my applications folder. I just ended up trashing the old one before dragging the new one in. Never had to do it that way before. Chrome seems too unfinished and clunky to me and Safari is just plain slow.

Mine wouldn't install at first either. Then I used App Zapper to clear everything out and it went smoothly.

Nice update. This is the fastest Firefox has felt in a while for me.

I've got a question, after this update I noticed that when looking at the bookmarks the little icon that is usually to the left of the bookmark is no longer there. How does one turn this feature back on? It really helps me to recognize my sites by seeing their logo/icon to the left of the mark. I suppose I can get along without it, but would like it back.

Funny, they just updated to 9.01 as I was typing this post. Wonder what it fixed, not my icon thingys. Sad

Those icons are called "favicons" and they come from the site visited - and the site can choose to dynamically update them, so they keep changing (like, for example Google Calendar showing the date).

You might have to actually visit the bookmarked sites first, for Firefox 9 to refresh the favicons that the site is currently using?

(This may be rubbish, in which case, I apologise - and you can ignore me!)

Thanks, I new they had a name but couldn't remember what they were. I was aware that you have to visit the site first, but even after that they don't show up. It is definitely something to do with FF 9, because I'm used to just clicking each bookmark till I get through all of them and replace all the favicons after a major update but that's not working this time around. Now that I know the right name I will Google it and see if I can fix it. Thanks

Version 9.0.1 is already out. It sounds like they had some real issues with the initial release.

Yeah, I was able to add the fullscreen icon too. I missed it on the first look. That being said, it still doesn't work like a native fullscreen app and give you access to the menubar. It seems more like a workaround.
