There are some rumors out there about Apple discontinuing the Mac Pro and beefing up the iMac and Mac mini. That's fine by me, but might this also be the time for Apple to introduce a new mid-size tower? Now that Steve Jobs is gone, might Apple be more open to the idea? I'm kinda thinking maybe.

I didn't see anything, other than wishful thinking, about beefing up the iMac and the mini.

I would still love to see the return of the Cube.

the new mac mini server is so good that I sold my 2010 mac pro! now there are reasons this works for me graphics are the least important use for my computers. fast storage and good cpus are what I need. A mac mini server is 850 as the refurb price. the pegasus r6 is 1320 on discount price. that is 2170. that includes 7tb of storage at fast speeds.

a base 2010 mac pro is 2169 refurbished. that includes 1tb of storage. same price extra 6tb of storage and you pull about 100 watts an hour vs 300 watts an hour.

this setup is better in all cases except gpu power. so the new mini does not need much improvement to really kill off single processor mac pros.

I didn't know you sold the MacPro. I thought you were planning on hanging on to it for quite some time. I'm amazed and glad that the mini server is equally serving your needs.
That is quite the power savings. Likely you will end up much further ahead in this scenario... Especially when it comes time to upgrade the mini again. The cost will be marginal compared to gettin another Mac Pro

Wow, that's why I've been buying Mac minis all along. I'm using the money saved from their low power consumption to go towards buying a Mac Pro. Wink

It would be sad to see the Mac Pro go, but towers really do seem like aging dinosaurs these days. I think all-in-ones and smaller machines are the way things are going now and Apple seems to be good at jumping ahead of trends and being progressive with their product lines. I'm not even sure a smaller tower makes sense for them anymore. Not that I wouldn't want one for myself, but I'm just saying.

I agree Devo. At the consumer level I would never purchase another tower. I still have two minis but I highly prefer our iMac. I guess I have to say the mini did it's job. It was the computer that got me to switch in 2005.

Now that I have switched my Mac mini works best as a specialized device ie. home theatre.

I love the all in one design of an iMac, but the mini is certainly the computer, when an external display (be it a 60" flat screen or an anti glare monitor is your preference).
I have a lot of customers that do pro level work on iMacs. Mac Pros still have their place. I certainly think they are due for at redesign, but they still sell well through our corporate division. I never ever sell them in retail though.
If all we carried were Mac pros nobody would walk in the door.

What your mix of sales like Bandit? I'm talking Apple desktops (iMac, Mac Pro and Mac mini) vs MacBooks. I wouldn't doubt it's like 25% desktops and 75% MacBooks.

That's about right. I'd guess it's about 60% MacBook Pros, 20% iMacs, 15% MacBook Airs, <5% Mac minis <1% Mac Pros.

I've personally only sold 1 Mac Pro ever. They came in asking for it. Most people don't know what a Mac Pro or a Mac mini are.

The iPad is having a significant impact on laptop and desktop sales. Less people are getting laptops. Many people are getting iMacs and iPads. There have been a few times that I sell both a 27" iMac and an iPad to the same person. People are going ultra portable and ultra big.
