|

Hello ;
I have a 2007 Mac Mini Intel Duo Core Mini with recently upgraded memory and internal hard drive running Snow Leopard. It is in another room separate from the living room where the tv and stereo are located. I have a Linksys Router in the computer room wired from the cable modem with Cat5 cable to the living room for our streaming Blu-ray player to TV . We live right across from the the local branch of the Public Library with it's large wi-fi hot spot so I didn't want to go wireless , but wired.
Our LCD flat panel tv has a PC input setting and RGB 15 pin input connector and my outboard DAC is in the living room next to the stereo rack.
Can anyone with more pc skills than myself recommend the easiest and best way to get our iTunes music library out to the living room where I can plug it into my Musical Fidelity DAC and stereo ?
I would prefer to change playlist selections in the living room if possible , maybe with a remote .
My amp is a class A tube amp, so no HDMI ,and I don't own a cell phone , so those aren't options in plans.
I don't want to buy another Mini quite yet to set up in the living room permanently as I recently retired and my budget has shrunk accordingly.
I also don't want to buy a netbook to run things as it's not a Mac.
Any helpful advice greatly appreciated. |

| Sounds like you need an AppleTV ($99.00) or other similar network media player. Does your DAC accept optical audio input? |

YOU need to move your vga image a long ways if you want to see the mini's visual output. do you have a 1.83 or a 2.0 mini ? _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

also if you want the mini to give vga to the tv do you want the mini to feed a monitor in the other room where it sits. I if you can have a little screen in the living room to see what is on the mini would that work? _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

Thanks for your replies.
My Mini is a 1.83
My Musical Fidelity V-DAC has SPDIF, coaxial and optical input options.
Could I run Ethernet cable from my router to the apple tv in the living room and optical output to my DAC ?
Would the sound from the DAC be compromised in the cable length to reach over 50 ft. to the apple tv.
I'm planning on using the Decibel software on the Mini for iTunes playback |

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2600005?start=0&tstart=0
this thread indicates that you can run the ethernet cable to the apple tv.
you may or may not need a switch like this.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127325
the ethernet cable is twisted pair tech.
you may be okay with a fifty foot run.
that switch is pretty nice piece of gear I have one. I run
1)router
2) switch
3a) a mac mini 3b) an iMac 3c) a mac pro 3d) blu ray player 3e) a synology nas 3f) a sony google tv
still can attach 2 more devices
I am thinking if you go
1)router
2)switch
3a) mini
3b) apple tv optical to dac
3c)blu-ray
This leaves you room for more 5 more hookups and should work. low cost 99 for apple tv and 40 for switch _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram
