okay I have determined that this (?) software cd should work on the base mini and the server mini with fast results.

So I ordered the apple macbook pro refurb that has a snow os x disc that I believe will work quickly. The machine came back in stock this sunday so i grabbed it. I plan to load it in my server first and test snow speeds. rather then say the os x build now or which macbook pro refurb is correct I will post it if I get a good snow score with no problems.

we will be interested to see how Philip has got on with the MBP disc.

my attempts have so far floundered using a SL 10.6.0 install disc, the only one that I have available.

Is it possible to clone a startup disc to SL 10.6.6 from a 2009 mini and get that to work ?

10.6.7 or 10.6.8 won't work for me, as the OCS print driver stopped working for those upgrades.

Have also tried the VMware Fusion virtualization route which have resulted in the 2011 mini having kernel panics upon loading the SL disc.

Meanwhile, at the Apple Support Communities posting:-

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3209335?start=225&tstart=0

it seems that there may be Apple licence restrictions preventing the virtualization method proceeding, for now anyway.

If you are not used to this kind of experimentation, it can be a little difficult but it is very encouraging to read of the lengths that the more adventurous will go to. such as :-

I think you would need the version that has Sandy Bridge support. That might just be 10.6.3, but I'm not sure.

thanks SC

My son has an April 2011 MBP, so hopefully he has a restore disc with it.

I will try that later when he turns up.

Is it possible to clone such a dvd ?

I have acquired a 10.6.7 mbp disk while it does snow leopard on the new mini it does it badly. to be honest as of today no one has a real solution. what this does do is make the 2011 mbp the machine to own. the base 15 inch model does sl perfectly and really fast.

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC721LL/A

over 1500 but runs snow super fast and runs lion super fast. the trick is to add a second hdd make one for snow and one for lion.

the next best solution is this

http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC438LL/A

the 2010 server use one disk for lion and one for snow. much slower then the mbp but half the price.

I really thought that i could get the 2011 server to run snow fast using the disk from the 2011 mbp .
not really geekbench is 2000 for sn leopard 9700 for lion. real world sl still is brutal on the new mini.

For now I use my 2010 mac pro as a lion/snow machine both are great.

all 2009 and all 2010 mac pros will do it. the 2010 mac mini server will do it and the 2011 mbp if you get one with the correct disc can do it.

thanks Philip,

the list is fairly broad and worth another try.

Whilst the solutions are not ideal, they still appear to work ( not for me yet but still trying ).

These things have to be tried, because the option of upgrading Vectorworks 12 to VW 2010, 2011 or 2012, on two Mac, plus changing the OCE CS2224 printer ( lack of Lion driver ), is too expensive to contemplate.

In the meantime, my wife has asked why I have spent a load of dosh on a new mini that does not work. You try to explain about how things move on and about the need to upgrade.

In truth Lion may prove its worth for those who don't need to run PowerPC or Classic programs. When it comes to some peripherals, Lion is going to remain a problem for some time to come.

Thanks again.

have just been handed a MBP install disc, SL 10.6.6, and a separate Applications DVD.

The Mac Book is also a Core i5 2.3 GHz machine, which matches the configuration of my 2011 mini. It includes support for Thunderbolt.

I will recheck the posted install procedure, and give it a try.

The 2011 mini has been partitioned, ready to accept the SL install.

the installation appeared to work, when you boot from the 2011 mini in TDM, using 10.6.6, back to the host machine.

However, when booting directly from the mini, the screen goes black.

Does the 2011 mini need the screen drivers in 10.6.8 ?

I would guess it's an issue from using the restore disc, instead of a retail OS X DVD, and not a driver issue.

the mini won't boot because the efi looks for the internal hdd to have lion. it then trys to find the lion recovery partition on the internal which is missing. as the internal only has 10.6.6

if you have an external hdd with lion clone from that mini it will boot into lion. after it can't find a good internal lion, so attach a lion clone and boot.

then go to system preferences and you should see the external lion disc and you should see the internal 10.6.6 pick the 10.6.6 as the startup drive and you should boot into snow . then run a software update into 10.6.8

thanks Philip,

fully understand and greatly appreciate your guidance.

Have to stick with SL 10.6.6 for now, as print drivers stopped working for my CAD plotter OCE CS2224, when Apple introduced 10.6.7. Unfortunately, OCE have not responded with updated drivers or to emails.

In the meantime, I am still happily working on the 2009 mini running under 10.6.6 and can wait until there is a problem with that mini, or it is decided to spend £2000 on a new Epson Stylus Pro 7700 plotter.

It is just possible that the virtualization approach can work with VMware Fusion or Parallels, dependent on the lifting of any Apple Licence restrictions and its worth keeping an eye on the Apple Support Communities thread :-

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3209335?

Anyway, the procedure was proven, as the 2011 mini did boot Snow Leopard in TDM.

Just an update.

have just about given up the idea of running SL on the 2011 mini.

Had looked into the vitualization method posted but not being into command line or Terminal, backed off for fear of loosing work time if things goes pear shaped. Interested to hear that the method does not work with Parallels 7.

Then this interesting method was posted :-

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3209335?start=255&tstart=0

will try this tomorrow as have spare minis, not earning their keep.

in the meantime :-
OCE had introduced a Lion driver for my plotter that works and have spent a fortune to upgrade to Vectorworks 2012 ( previously version 12 .5 ). So now fully working under Lion but must say that the platform is not fully stable. Had Finder freeze and Vectorworks crash twice. Hopefully things will settle down

Success, that worked a treat.

Well done MichaelLAX

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3209335?start=255&tstart=0

So you can run your old legacy, PowerPC software on Lion, albeit using a connected computer in share screen mode.

The choice of the Fixed IP seemed to be important, so pick one close to the mini 2011's address.

Wow, that is creative, but convoluted. I gave up and got a late 2009 mini (with a 7200 500 gig drive) for $450. Sold my 2.0 Ghz mini for $250. Not as fast as a new Mini, but only $200 and I have both SL and Lion running on sep. partitions.
