Anyone install Linux on a 2011 mini yet?
my debian "testing daily build -aug 15" seems to install fine except the keyboard keymap(picking default kernel one works). but I cant get grub to work ;|
my 11 mac mini:
5,2 with i7 with the radeon hd 6630m 256mb
8 gigs of ram
256gig SSD as first drive
750gig 7200rpm drive as secondary
(have an air dvd drive)

/dev/disk0

...2:......Apple_HFS Macintosh HD............250.1 GB...disk0s2
...3:......Apple_Boot Recovery HD............650.0 MB...disk0s3
/dev/disk1

...2:......Apple_HFS Macintosh HD2..........374.0 GB....disk1s2
...3:......Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP..375.8 GB....disk1s3
I'd like to put it on the disk1 (second drive)
don't mind pulling win7 off and repartioning the second drive...
do I use a hybrid MBR/GPT ?? with something like gptsync/gfdisk (GPT) on the secondary drive... (how?)
I have rEFIt but I think its buggy with lion and the new hardware...
I've run linux for the past 10 years+ but.... |

I am not a Linux user. Why do you have to install Linux on a Mac if you can run Linux apps in OS X and you have access to all of the same command line tools as any flavor of Linux? I am not being a smart-ass; rather, not being a Linux user it would be nice if a Linux guy would explain this to me. I thought about dabbling in Linux long ago myself, but the promise of OS x UNIX kind of killed those desires.
Thanks

Why run Linux on a Mac? Because you can. Also, if you like to customize your desktop, Linux is a breath of fresh air; much more customizable than any other OS, barring perhaps BSD. In my case, I'm satisfied testing out various flavours of Linux on virtual machines with Virtualbox or VMware Fusion. But to get the full power of your machine, you have to run it as a primary OS. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

So you don't run Linux for any particular application? It is all about how configurable the OS is? _________________ Proud Cube owner. Oh, I also own a 2011 2.7ghz i7 Mac Mini. |

I don't use any particular application regularly in my Linux VM's. I create them and use them just to learn about Linux. That may change, though. I have an older version of a stat program (JMP) that is installable on MacOSX, Windows and Linux. It is, unfortunately, legacy software (PPC), and will not run in Lion. I had it running in a SL VM in VMware Fusion, but made the mistake of upgrading Fusion to version 4. I had found a patch that allowed Fusion 3 to run a SL client VM, but the patch doesn't work in version 4. I will either have to revert to Fusion 3 or run my program in a Linux vm until a patch appears for version 4. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Have you tried using Fink?
http://www.finkproject.org/
I'm just curious what a Linux user thinks of the Fink Project.
Thanks. _________________ Proud Cube owner. Oh, I also own a 2011 2.7ghz i7 Mac Mini. |

I was aware of Fink and might have even tried it once before but it doesn't allow the running of another operating system as I recall. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

You are correct, fink isn't a way to run Linux; rather, it is an effort to port packages to Mac OSX from other flavors of UNIX. As of now ther are over 12,000 available. _________________ Proud Cube owner. Oh, I also own a 2011 2.7ghz i7 Mac Mini. |
