Well I followed the OWC video instructions for replacing the HD in my base 2011 mini. All went well except that I couldn't reseat the IR cable. When I look at the logic board in the area where it was attached, I can't see any obvious place to reseat it, so I'm wondering if I pulled out the connector itself. I don't use IR, so is this critical? I can't even see any reference to IR in System Information. Anyone with experience on this one?

Thanks everyone for the links. Unfortunately, they are to the older minis, but the fixit guide at least shows the same connector. It is clear now that I pulled off the connector instead of disconnecting the cable. I don't use IR anyway, but if there is an easy fix I would do it. I can see where the connector should go on the motherboard. Would there be any point to reattaching the connector with the soldered bits touching using contact cement, tape or wire glue?

Ouch!!!!!!!!!

If you broke off the connector don't bother replacing it or if you have the 200.00 have apple fix it.

There are usb sound cards that work with that model of mini a lot of them are only 5.99 on amazon I'm using a 7.1 one myself.

It was the IR cable connector that broke off; I don't think this has anything to do with sound.

I believe the IR cable is so you can use a clicker to control the mini, like for Front Row.

Yes, but I am confused about the sound portion as well. Thinking their is confusion regarding the red light that comes out of the S/PDIF-Audio port which is not InfraRed...it is visible whereas IR isn't.

But back to your dilemma, that cable junction seems pretty delicate, didn't pop out as easily the examples made it appear. Did the wires come out or did the entire bus come off the motherboard?

All that popped off is the little plastic connector that the cable plugs into. It popped off because in the OWC video that showed the various steps for changing the drive, I didn't see clearly enough what the guy did to release the cable. It looked to me like he pried upward, same as with the HD connector, but upon closer inspection with the higher resolution video, it turned out to be a lateral movement. Now I can see on the board where the solder was holding the connector to the motherboard, and I still wondering if I can't use either some form of glue or tape, or cold solder to put the connector back in contact with the board.

I can see that the connector is the same; I'm not sure about the cable. But the cable itself isn't damaged and it's still in the connector. The connector isn't damaged either, but it is no longer attached to the motherboard. My best option at this point seems to be to either not worry about it, or to try to re-attach the connector. Suggestions?

the socket on the boards are weak. they are shaped like the letter c if they are intact a magnifying glass would help. many threads abound about pulling a cable out of those little c sockets. if you broke that socket you should forget about attaching the cable. I will find a shot of the cable and the socket for you

Thanks, Phil; I'm pretty sure that nothing is broken; just the socket dis-attached.

I did the same exact thing. I have no need for the remote, but now my power light is not working. Apparently there is some connection between the IR board and the power light. What else have we screwed up?
