Apple Releases OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive
Tuesday, August 16, 2011
Posted by: Kenan
Apple has started selling the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive via their online store. This drive basically allows users to install Mac OS X Lion on a Mac without the need of a broadband Internet connection. All that's required is an open USB port and 7GB of free space on your hard drive for installation. You just plug it in and click install. The OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive is available for $69.00. It's currently shipping out in 1-3 business days.

funny i wouldn't spend 69.00 for a usb thumb stick considering the thumb sticks are only 20.00.
20.00+30.00=55.00 if you include tax not 69.00.
kinda fishy |

I wouldn't characterize it that way, every item we have ever purchased from Apple comes at a premium. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

I'm not going to justify Apple's pricing, but comparing an online distribution price to the price of physical media isn't a fair comparison, the cost of distribution is entirely different. In my opinion both are a good price.
It is the consumers choice whether they want to buy or not. Vote with your dollars. |

I am guessing it will boot like the one many of us made the day of release. But it will probably still DL something. _________________ 2.0 GHz i7 Mini 8 GB RAM, OWC Merc Extreme SSD & Samsung Spinpoint

I also wonder if I buy the usb can I copy it in case i lose it. if i do make a copy must it be to a ssd/hdd or a second usb stick
I purchased lion online(loaded to a 2009 mini and a 2009 mac pro) and I have lion with a mini server 2011 mini.
What is allowed with what. Can i recover with this usb and no internet. can I use it to make the server just a standard lion. questions many questions ? _________________ 2010 Mm 2.4 C2D oem 320gb hdd 8gb ram

From Macworld: | Quote: | | According to Apple's, those installing Lion from the USB stick will not be able to reinstall Lion using Lion Restore. Instead, if your computer runs into a problem, you’ll need to boot from the USB stick to address it (or bring it into your local Apple Store). |

It's only $9 more than the real price for 10.7.
$30 for 10.6(you can't get 10.7 without it) plus $30 for 10.7 is $60. Therefore I posit that Apple is only charging $9 for a 4GB memory stick.

I can agree, but I'll go back to my argument that Apple can charge whatever they want.
They charged $130 for 10.5, but $30 for 10.6. Both were distributed, and purchased at retail.

It might also be the prettiest memory stick you'll ever own. That's gotta count for something, right? |
