Apple Releases Lion Recovery Disk Assistant

Apple today released the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant via their Software Update Utility and website for direct download. According to the company, the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant lets you create Lion Recovery on an external drive that has all of the same capabilities as the built-in Lion Recovery: reinstall Lion, repair the disk using Disk Utility, restore from a Time Machine backup, or browse the web with Safari. This drive can be used in the event you cannot start your computer with the built-in Recovery HD, or you have replaced the hard drive with a new one that does not have Mac OS X installed. The Lion Recovery Disk Assistant weighs in at 1.07MB and requires a Mac running OS X Lion with an existing Recovery HD. You also need a USB hard drive or thumb drive with at least 1GB of free space for creating the recovery disk.

This just provides a supported way to put the recovery partition on a USB key.
If you need to use it to reinstall Mac OS X Lion it'll have to download Mac OS X Lion from the web.
What would've been better would've been a supported way to restore InstallESD.dmg to a USB drive.

Even with InstallESD on a USB drive or DVD the first thing it does when you start the install is to jump on the Internet and download more files  So I'm not sure how reliable an install is going to be if you don't have an Internet connection at the time.
I'm also slightly worried that a new install with jump on the Internet and download the latest version of the OS and not a 10.7.0 install. My iMac has been a nightmare since 10.6.3-10.6.8 only a fresh install of 10.6.2 is stable and I need 10.6.2 to extract the files required to patch the later releases. So having an install that forces me to the latest point release straight out of the box isn't very encouraging.

cool minus one issue one very big issue!!!
This will create a recover disk for lion solo without the server information because server is a separate upgrade so this does nothing for people with server.
also you could just burn the install esd disk image to a dvd no need for this app |
