I was just having an online chat with an Apple "Expert" from the Apple store & she checked & confirmed that you CAN install Snow Leopard on the new Minis. Should I believe her???

I got it to work. I booted off my old Mini disk using Target disk mode and it worked (it would not boot off my laptop HD). I'm in the process of cloning my old Mini HD to a partition on the 2011 Mini.
There is only one strange nit, the cursor turned into a non-spinning beachball at first. Later it reverted to the correct cursor; but it seems flakey. The OS itself seems solid.

Even though I did get the base model to boot SL off my old Mini (using Target Mode), I'm starting to think it's might not be a go. When I cloned the old Mini disk over to the Mini 2011, it wouldn't boot. Someone who knows code better than me is going to have to figure this. out.

As a final test, I did a block level copy from my 2009 Mini with SL 10.6.8, and the 2011 mini definitely boots SL and appears stable. But there are 3 issues:
1. The cursor appears in various guises (non-spinning beach ball, etc.), but is usable
2. The mini HD video connection doesn't work (black screen)
3. It doesn't wake from sleep.
Unless you are very desperate, you won't put up with these issues; simpler to just get something that will run SL properly.

I got a 2.3 mini in today I have a work around idea. I will do it on weds the 27th to see what happens. If I am right it will be easy to test it. you need a real sl disk not a mini sl disk.
turn the new mini upside down open the case and detach the stata cable. then boot with an external dvd player and the sl disk if it boots you have a shot.

I thought that the Mini was causing the kernel panic when connected in Target Disk Mode. However I was trying to install the retail Snow Leopard (which is 10.6.0) onto the Mini using an MBP which required 10.6.3!
There is a step after all of the applicable files are copied to the Mini (TDM) where the Source machine reboots and is supposed to continue the install. This is where my MBP was freezing up and I couldn't understand why. Well it turns out that the MBP is attempting to boot from the SL disk (10.6.0), however this machine requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.3 so the boot was hanging.
I ejected the retail version of OS X, input the Recovery disk I got with the MBP (which is 10.6.3) and the install continued as usual. Once installed I booted directly to the Mini's hard drive (TDM) via the MBP and ran Software Update to get to 10.6.8. Then rebooted and let the Mini boot itself...and we're up!
Steps:
1) Put Mini in Target Disk Mode (Firewire only)
2) Put SL retail install disk into Host Mac and install to the TDM drive
3) When the reboot hangs power the machine down (or if you're fast hold down Option on that reboot) and restart holding Option.
4) When the boot choice screen appears eject the Retail disk and input your Recovery disk.
5) Boot to the Recovery disk and the install picks up automatically (don't worry, it's actually installing 10.6.0 even though you're booted into 10.6.3's recovery).
6) Once you've gone through the new user introduction stuff (input username, etc) run Software Update
7) Power down the Mini and restart it w/o TDM.
8 ) Profit |

Have followed the thread, and these guys appear to have cracked the lock out.
With Snow Leopard possible on the 2011 minis, the door is open for those with older Power PC / Classic programs and third party peripherals.
I for one, am going to try it, though work this week is going to be very busy, but hope to make time to go to the Southampton Apple store to buy the base model.
Hopefully can take on board philiparcario's recommendation for cloning the un-booted new mini's hard drive first, which means a double slot caddy needs to be ordered and then a spare drive.
A 128 GB SSD looks very tempting. |

If you follow that thread they are still having problems with cursors, unusable miniDP, and at least one report of reduced performance under SL.

I get geek bench numbers of under 2000 snow vs 6300 lion. the idea works much better if you use the 2011 13 inch macbook pro with snow and load it to the base 2011 mini.
the cpu and the gpu are one in the same. If you have that snow leopard disc from a 2011 macbook pro 13 inch it is worth trying to load to a 2011 base mini.

No, I'm just following this thread for future reference.
However, I'm not sure I did any hardwork, other than reading Accelerate Your Mac for the last gajillion years! 
Otherwise, I think 10.6.8 is supposed to have the Sandy Bridge support, but if not, then maybe Tonymacx86 or Insanely Mac might be good places to go looking for bits needed to get it running better.
