In the past few days, I've noticed something odd happening; sometimes between watching episodes in Plex, the audio seems to disappear. It's not the few second delay of waiting for the TOSLINK connection -- that I'm used to. Rather, the audio goes away and doesn't come back until I've rebooted. This effects the whole machine, not just Plex.
The only pattern I have observed is this: There is a show I have two versions of some episodes for: 1080p MKvs and 480p AVIs. When stopping one version of the file and reloading the other through the Plex dialogue, the audio drops.
I've checked physical connections, nothing's lose; any ideas?

Guessing that you updated to 10.6.8? If so there is a known issue with a changed kext file in the update. Replacing it with the 10.6.7 kext seems to be working for the majority of people. Some are reporting permissions issues with the change, but there is quite a bit out there about fixing that.

no i do hate to tell you a lot of times it's the toslink cable itself or the mini cannot supply enough power to the toslink to keep the sound going a lot of times a bad incoding of a movie is to blame for the issue.
Let me explain what i would do.
You need 2 applications.
1. bodega the alternative appstore free download at www.appbodega.com
2. run bodega and download fairmount do a search once downloaded go into bodega applications find the app in the download list and select install
3. fairmount is a universal binary ripper that decodes dolby digital better then mac the ripper
4. then use the latest version of handbrake and code it into a mpeg-4 highest settings highest sound rate let it convert and save.
thats it
i have toslink and have never had any issues doing it this way |

I would agree, maybe a cable but under the circumstances and the explanation that audio returns when rebooted doesn't make any sense. Based on what the OP is stating, I am guessing that the issue is 10.6.8...based simply on timing of the release.
But the rest isn't necessary and in some cases incorrect; Fairmount, Bodega nor Handbrake have anything to do with what the user appears to be experiencing. I haven't fiddled with Fairmount in years, but the ripping process by MTR, RipIt etc do absolutely nothing to DD...it is an exact copy. I assume that Fairmount and a persons choice of ripper is the same. By the way you explain Handbrake, it sounds like you are degrading the sound by going AAC or MP3 rather than leaving it as DTS or DD passthrough; there is no way to adjust settings when passthrough is enabled. If the OP is using MakeMKV it is certainly faster and higher quality than the methods you propose.
Anyway, enough segue.

ez061111, thank you for the heads up -- I don't know why it never occurred to me that I had recently updated!
I tried replacing the kext file as suggested, and it didn't do much for me, so I'm using this as an opportunity to do a clean wipe and install of 10.6.7 on my Mini.

| I ran into this issue with some annoyance. After fearing the worst I discovered putting the computer to sleep and waking it up again will restore the optical digital audio output. Let me know if that works for you. |
