Posted by: Staff
Western Digital today announced the release of its latest generation My Book Studio external hard drives for Mac users. The new drives come in capacities of 1TB, 2TB and 3TB, and feature a brushed aluminum casing to match the appearance of a Mac. This design also serves to keep the drive cool while in use. The new drives also include FireWire 800/400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, user-controlled automatic backup software and drive management, and password protection and hardware encryption. Pricing for the new line of My Book Studio external hard drives starts at $149.99.

| I've always been a fan of the MyBook drives. These don't look radically different, but it's nice to see them move away from plastic and go towards an aluminum enclosure. I would probably buy one if I were in the market. |

They look nice, but I kinda feel the same way when it comes to external drives now. They are just a commodity in what is an over-saturated market. I just go with the best deal that has Firewire. Not so much the latest and greatest when it comes to design. |

Caviar Green hard drives? Aren't those the ones running at 5400 rpm? If so, big fail on this one. _________________ 2011 Mac mini with 8GB of RAM

It looks like WD has their own version of Time Machine
thats called SmartWare and backs up in real time. Click
on "WD SmartWare" next to the "Features" category.
The enclosure looks good. I like their Hard Drives but I've
had bad luck with their enclosures.
I wunder if the backup software works. Does it have its
SmartWare written to a partition you can't delete if you
don't like it? What happens if you attach more than one
SmartWare external HD?

Yup, WD green drives are great drives. Perfect for time machine back-ups etc.
Being these drives are marketed as back-up drives (not working drives) a 5400 RPM cool, power efficient drive makes sense. This is a passive enclosure a 5400 RPM drive will be much more reliable in this type of enclosure.
Billb... likely the Smartware software is built into the firmware and you can't get rid of it. There is a good chance that the controller is integrated into the drive as well. For these reasons, I am not a fan of WD enclosures. I still like their drives though. I installed a WD green in a Macally enclosure for these reasons. |
