Video Editing Software

I am recording programs from TV to a DVD recorder. I would like to take these programs and edit them in a program that will allow me to remove commercials and create several different files instead of one big file where all the shows are part of one file.

I am completely new to this. How do I accomplish this and with what program? Any freeware that can do this?

Freeware MPEG Streamclip should open the .VOB files on the DVDs you produce. It can then transcode/save them as QuickTime MOV files (or DV files) which you can bring into iMovie, Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro to edit as you wish.

You will need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 playback option to do this, which is bundled with Final Cut (although I'm not sure about iMovie.)

(BTW: When you try to play the files in MPEG Streamclip, you won't hear any audio. This is normal, as the VOB files are MPEG2 with multliplexed audio. The saved QT mov files will be OK, and include audio.)
