Hi,
I use NeoOffice to replace MS Office for all sort of office works. I think there is a big missing from NO spreadsheet compared with MSO: can't have 2 or more lines of text in a cell (remember in MSO, you can hit return and go to next line and ... without leaving the cell, of course the cell (row) height will increase accordingly).
I could miss the different way of accomplishing this in NO. Does anyone know how or confirm the dead issue? Thanks for sharing. |

Did you try <shift> return?
My Mac mini is in a box right now  so I can't test it for you. |

This is what I got:
I type "let me try" in a cell and it reaches the right edge of the cell; so I hit "return" and the highlighted cell moves to the cell below (leave the text-filled cell); if I hit <shift> "return", the highlighted cell moves to the one above (also leave the original one). So no good? |

I haven't got NeoOffice installed anymore but I'm sure it did work. Try doing it with ALT Return or CTRL Return

I've just checked it in Numbers and it works with ALT Return. so give that a try first

Thanks, Cypher. Yeah, it (ALT Return) works with Numbers, but doesn't with NO Calc... Maybe I miss something set in NO? Can't figure out! (I do have the most updated NO version though.) |

from the HELP screen in NeoOffice:
Writing Multi-line Text
1.Pressing the Command+Enter keys inserts a manual line break. This shortcut only works directly in the cell, not in the input line.
If you want the text to automatically break at the right border of the cell, proceed as follows:
1.Select all the cells where you want the text to break at the right border.
2.In Format - Cells - Alignment, mark the Wrap text automatically option and click OK. |

Papercut,
Thank you so much for educating/helping me with the clear, precise solution. Now since line breaking in a spreadsheet cell is supposed a single function (no sense for non-line breaking) and there are already arrow keys for moving cell highlight, let wonder why NO has to make it a special way to implement as different from MS office's natural way of hitting "return"? (by hitting return in NO spreadsheet, the cell highlight is moved and no linebreak is done) |

Then I would be confused, when I hit return and expect to go to the next cell, instead of entering another line in the current cell?

Are you using NeoOffice? Very strange! My try: either from inside the cell or input line, hit return all goes to the next (below) cell, no line break. (I did check the NO Help and confirmed that line break has to be done by special way other than just hit return.) |

Neooffice is a good software and you can have two or more lines of text what you have to do is click alt return simultaneously then it will definitely work.

Recently I discovered yet another OpenOffice clone for Mac called LibreOffice. I prefer their user interface over NeoOffice. Perhaps it might be useful for you.

| Ranter, Thanks for referring LO. I found it very same to NO except it has stand-alone "drawing", "formula" etc. I see no significant difference in user interface between LO and NO though. I am not sure, but aren't OO and NO for Mac only? Anyway I am keeping NO ... |

I sometimes work with spreadsheets that have very large cells, and I stretch them across two 24" displays. In that situation NeoOffice behaves very badly while LibreOffice lets me scroll gracefully through the contents of a cell.

OpenOffice is designed to run on nearly all current day operating systems. Back in the day when Sun Microsystems still existed it was a shot across the bow of their then arch rival Microsoft.
NeoOffice is a Mac specific rendering of OO designed to offer a more typical Mac UI.
