I would start by setting up a "user" account with "standard" privileges. By default OS X has you set-up as an administrator.

Then use your computer under that user account.

Any particular reason for that? On Windows pcs my main was administrator passworded, but other people were just user accounts. Why wouldn't I want the user account I use the most to be an admintrator account?

For security reasons you want to use a user account for daily use, you don't need to administer the computer on a daily basis. This applies to your PC as well.

I don't want to get too technical, but basically you want to prompted before installing applications that could potentially harm or change your system. You can still install the applications from your user account, but you will be prompted for your admin password.

If you follow the advice above (set up a user account). I wouldn't worry about messing up your system. If you did, you would only be messing up that account and not the entire operating system. Macs aren't like Windows machines. You are not going to have to reinstall you operating system. You could simply delete that account and create another.

If you have a back-up drive (which I recommend). You can set-up Apple's Time Machine, which will restore you computer back to any point in time or...
you can make a clone (exact replica) of you hard drive with a free software program called "SuperDuper".

Let's say you backed up you computer today with SuperDuper and you actually managed to mess it up tonight. You could copy your original configuration back to your computer's internal hard drive in about 1/2 hr.

I have a WD my book 500g. Need to copy stuff to my PC laptop then reformat it to fat 32. Is that correct? I tried to plug it into the Airport extreme but it does not recognize it. I think this is the reason. After reformat will this work for time machine? I want it plugged into the Extreme so I can access it with my laptop also.
