How to replace temperature sensor?

Hi,

Long time reader, first time posting. Yesterday I upgraded the ram to my Intel Core2Duo Mac Mini, and while trying to put the temperature sensor back in place, I somehow managed to cut through the wires, disconnecting them. Now, of course, the mini sounds louder than my old Powermac G5, which I just can't have .

I was doing some searching on Google and on this forum and came upon this post:

It unfortunately wasn't very definitive on if the poster got the mini quiet again.

So I'm thinking that I have two options:

1. Strip the ends of the exposed cables, and try acquire a new end piece (what is that little doohickey called anyway?) Then somehow get the cable back into the connector.

2. Try to get a whole new cable to replace the broken one. Is that a piece I can have an Apple specialist order for me? Any idea on part numbers?

Has anyone attempted either of these two options? Which would you recommend? Or is there another way to go?

Around the 123MM forums, it's generally called the "Fan Sensor Cable", but it's officially called the "Hard Drive Sensor Cable" by Apple. I believe 922-7319 is the correct part number. It's about $40, because it also comes with the thermal sensor.

Chances are possible that you could reattach the plug if you carefully worked it back in.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I went ahead and contacted my local Apple dealer, who is ordering the part for me. It only cost $25 as well, which is better than what I could find online.

Perhaps I'll do a write-up of my experience as a resource for others in my situation.

Today I was able to successfully replace the Hard Drive Sensor Cable. The part number mentioned above, 922-7319 is the correct part. It arrived in one day from Apple to my local dealer.

Replacing the cable was not very difficult... well relatively speaking. I had to take apart the case, hard drive, and super drive to best get at it. I then followed the cable to the sensor (it sort of pokes down near where the side of the hard drive is). I took it out, and put the new cable in the same spot. I reassembled the mini, plugged it in, and voila! It was silent again.

I want to thank ClunkClunk for helping me out with this problem, and I'd like to thank the existence of this forum in the first place. Thanks!

I can't figure out how the little black connector thing is supposed to fit or attach to the interconnect board. I know where it goes, based on photos I've seen on the web, but I can't find out how it attaches. It looks like there is no physical connection of the two tiny leads on the end of the little black thing at the end of the cable to the board.

Any help or direction will be most appreciated.

not the same issue you have a 2009 not a 2007 or a 2008 .


I would need a really clear picture of your board to see the damage you did. the cable design on a 2009 is different

The photos and guide I've seen before; they don't address how to reconnect the little black thing (into which the 2 leads go) back onto the board. I would even solder the 2 leads onto it if I knew for sure where to solder them. I knew the general position of that little black thing on the board, but there does not seem to be a way to attach it so that there is an electrical connection of some type.

you should see a c or u shaped pocket on the board the black piece just snaps into place if you knocked the pocket off the board you are kind of S O L . To be serious is the black piece fully intact on the end of the cable.

Guess I'm SOL then, because there is no such pocket. The little black connector is intact, but has no place to go except to maybe glue it to the board (but that makes no sense without some connector to the circuits).

So I'm one of the unlucky ones who broke the 2 pins that the hard drive temp sensor cable connects to. Has anyone figured out if possible to fix this?
