When I modify am Image file
I tend to do it in stages. I
like to change something then
live with it for a while. Then change
something else, etc, etc, etc.

If I were to save my changes to a
format other than RAW then my Image
file would be compressed. RAW doesn't
compress the file. As far as I know, RAW
is the only Image file that isn't compressed.

You can make change, after change, after
change, and not suffer data loss by using
RAW. Thats why RAW is so popular.

TIFF or jpeg would be fine you only tweak
it a little bit and preferably once.

I suggest you revisit your understanding. TIFF is non lossy if you chose the non-LZW options. If you save in 16 bit TIFF you'll have a large file, but without loss. Even PSD files are considered by some to rather lossless, but I usually don't save to that format unless I am pretty sure I'm not going to be making any serious changes. There is a PSD Raw format as well.

JPEG is lossy by definition.

RAW is what comes out of your camera, not a file format you save to.

Yah I get that, here's Wikipedia's RAW page
for those unfamiliar with RAW. The potential
problem as I see it is, once you "save as" a TIFF
or jpeg, its a compressed file. I don't want to make
changes then "save as" a TIFF, and then do
that several more times. Each time its saved
its compressed.

If you use Photoshop or Elements and make
changes then you can "save as" by using
Photoshops version of RAW which is .psd
which isn't compressed.

I hope I've explained that adequately.

Uh, well you are wrong. A 12 - 14 bit RAW file will contain less info than a 16 bit TIFF. If you use LZW compression in TIFF then it is compressed, otherwise, nope. You might want to reread your Wikipedia link. Also, if you trust Wikipedia, lookup TIFF.

You know, a stupid old dog can still learn new tricks.
Here's Wikipedia's TIFF page. All these years I thought
TIFF compressed your file as opposed to just saving it.
